Ray,

Yep, looking forward to seeing it “whole.”[B]

After posting this, I did a little googling and got some wonderful news regarding Burlington Station. Last summer, ABC’s affiliate in Omaha, KETV, announced they were going to rennovate Burlington Station and turn it into their studios. This magnficent old station will be brought back to life and seems to have a bright future. While it is sad to see its current state with graffiti on the interior walls, it now appears that will all be remedied. For those interested, here is the newscast with a tour of the station:

jecorbett … Thanks for sharing the news about the Burlington station in Omaha! … Fantastic news!

Always good news to see a station preserved. Locally, the old Champaign, IL station, long out of use north of the previous station (which itself is north of the current station in the new Illinois Terminal building), is set to become the second location of the hottest BBQ outfit in these parts, the Black Dog.

It’s always great whenever any old station gets restored and repurposed, but Omaha’s Burlington Station is near and dear to my heart. Lots of great memories, mostly of picking up incoming relatives or my Dad returning from a business trip. Our family did take a train trip on the Burlington to spend Christmas with Mom’s family in 1959 with a side trip to Milwaukee on the North Shore to spend New Year’s with my Dad’s side of the family.

Amtrak built one of their standard boxy stations just east of the Burlington and their trains do make an extended stop there so twice I was able to look around a little. A year and a half ago I drove through Omaha and made it a point to visit the Burlington Station and her sister, Union Station. I was wowed by the way they brought back Union Station to house the Durham Western Heritage Museum. The main waiting room had been restored to its former grandeur with statues of passengers and railroad personnel spread throughout which gave it a ghostly feeling. As great as that was, it was disheartening to move to the other side of the tracks and see what had become of the Burlington. You didn’t have to go inside to know it was in poor shape.

About five or six years ago, I came upon a website showing plans to restore it and turn it into luxury condos but that was before the real estate bubble burst and the economy tanked so apparently those plans fell through. I was wondering whether the Burlington was going to be saved, but this latest find has lifted my spirits. Since it is going to house a working newsroom, it probably won’t be available for visitors except maybe on a limited basis, but it is good to know the building is being saved.
