Gidday All, Well early this morning didn’t start that well, got woken up at 0157 by a 2.9 earthquake, not much rock n roll but it was the rumble that woke me, noisier than “Her-in doors” snoring.[zzz]. Found out later that I had slept through the 5 earlier shocks. No damage done, just a bit more energetic “stress relief” than usual.Any how enough waffle.[:#]
Quite a while back I read an article in the May 1993 Model Railroader, by Don Mitchell, describing how Cris Hollinshead kitbashed an HO MDC Covered Hopper Kit into a shortened car. Here is my version of his hopper car, incorporating a few tips from doctorwayne, any faults in the execution are mine alone!!
The “Shortie” with an original MDC Covered Hopper.
Bear, nice looking car, I really get into kit building and bashing to make different cars. Here are three cars that I finished this past week, that I have been working on for a while.
Branchline 1000B Boxcar Kit with Full Fishbelly Side Sill, Used the Despatch Roofs and Ends as these cars were built at the Despatch Shops. Substituted an Athearn 10’ YSD from their Railbox kit and extended the door quides to accomodate the 10’ wide door, also used the 4 rung ladders from a another kit instead of the grabs in the Branchline kit to match the photos of this car. Installed Details West Cushion Underframe Coupler Pockets. Painted with Floquil Jade Green and lettered with Highball Graphics decals.
Eastern Car Works 2600CF Airslide Covered Hopper Kit, added airlines and A-line Sill Steps, painted with Scalecoat II MOW Gray and lettered with Microscale Decals in the early paint scheme.
Atlas 23,500Gal Tank Car Kit, painted with Scalecoat II Black and lettered with Highball Graphics decals.
Thanks for looking!

No rust on my railroad, sent from my Etch-a-Sketch - Mark I
Nice work,Bear,RIck,and Terry! No work on the layout for me this week but I did add another loco to my On3 roster,MMI K-27 453. It’s currently DC only, but runs great.
Caboose hobbies is having a Labor Day sale,so I’ll be heading there this morning to pick up a DCC/sound decoder…probably a QSI Titan. That’s what I put in #487,and I’m very happy with it.
Have a good weekend, and Happy Labor Day!
EDIT: Michael, you snuck in there while I was typing! Nice shot of the depot, the lights are great.
Bear: Nice work on the covered hopper. … Rick: nice work especially the NP Airslide. …Terry: Good idea for a caboose. … Michael: The C&O train looks great anywhere. … Mike: I like the On3 locomotives.
I’ll post steam, too. This is an older photo of my 2-6-6-2 and my 0-6-0.
Things have moved along rapidly. I decided to go ahead and lay down track for the main all the way to Crater Lake. Past Purgatory, it’s one long spur, but eventually it arrives at the quarry.
I gave my DL535E a run at things, but I have a couple of curves that it has a problem with due to the 3-axle trucks. And that long RPO is not well-suited . But it sure looks good at Crater Lake Junction.
C-19 “the 8 ball” of the Paradox Uravan and Placervile rolls out of its recent servicing in Durango to head for home along the RGS trackage to Placerville and its connection to the P.U.P. From there it is to take a short string of gondolas to Uravan then a caboose hop to the P.U.P. yards at Naturita-Nucla to bed-down in its own barn for the night.
Once again I have to say I’m impressed with everyone’s great photos! I ordered a few Super Tree kits from Scenic Express, and we “planted” a few on our remodeled scene. Here are a couple of images:
I was surprised when I opened the newest MR magazine to find our Rail Museum inside the back cover. The photo shows an Erie switchman lining the crossovers from the #1 main to the #2 main at Salamanca in 1946. That’s our museum on the right. It was already closed by the B&O for 13 years at that time. Here is the same location today:
I’ll have to forward this photo and info to the Editor so they might mention it in the magazine.
Some great work again this week guys. Keep them coming!
Here is one from the BRVRR.
NYC GP-40 #3083 passes Berea Station westbound at the head of a mixed freight. The loco is an Atlas with a Soundtraxx DSD-101LC decoder and an oval speaker installed. With the sound off this loco makes very little noise at all.
Thanks to all of you out there this is always the best thread of the week. Keep the photos and ideas coming.
