My “fun photo” to kick things off isn’t 100% fun. Mistakes were made, and I paid for them. But I wanted to share anyways!
Moral of the story? Make absolutely sure your masking tape is stuck down, GOOD, before you apply that next coat!
I’m sure a keen observer can figure out what I’m up to. I may try to save my paint here, but I may be forced to strip it all and start again. Oh well, so it goes.

Ellie: I’ve done that more times than I can remember. The FA can be a tricky shell to spray. I feel your pain! Keep trying, I’m sure it will be worth the effort!

Thanks Becky! I agree that certain details made this one a pain to mask off- though this isn’t your every-day Lionel 027 Alco shell! Take a closer look and see if you can spot the difference. I’ll have to take a photo tomorrow to “put things in perspective” [;)]

I’ve been a student of military aviation since I was a teenager but I have to admit I’m drawing a blank on that British flying boat. What is it?
Ellie, I repainted a Lionel 2065 this past week and used 3M blue masking tape. It worked pretty well. I did get a little spill-over into some areas but no big deal, I sprayed some of the paint into a plastic lid, just enough to make a puddle, and dipped a brush into the puddle and touched up the spill-over areas. It looked fine and after the final overspray with a dull coat clear finish you can’t spot the spill-overs at all. Before you do anything drastic try what I did, you’ve got nothing to lose.
I prefer a dull (flat) finish, I think it looks better than a high-gloss on a model, even if the prototype has a high-gloss finish.

just came across this thread. I recently finished a painting project of my own, and wanted to share what I learned:
I used Frog Tape yellow, for delicate surfaces. It made a tight seal with no bleeding. I would recommend highly.
My project was G gauge Bachmann Spectrum Mogul, I removed the drive wheels and domes and sprayed red accents to look like " Leviathan".

That’s actually the brand I used! I have had really good results with it, I just messed up with the application. It happens.
I forgot to share sooner, but I did technically take this picture on the weekend. For those who didn’t catch it sooner, the model I painted is not an 027 ALCo shell, but a Lionel HO ALCo shell! It is an 0537 from 1966, unfortunately repainted once before into an uninspiring Penn Central black. I decided it was the perfect canidate for a project.
Lionel made a prototype B&M ALCo in HO, but never put it into production. Though oddly enough a B&M work caboose was made, having no locomotive to match it.
The HO prototype ALCo looks very similar to the O gauge model, but the “blue” block and white pinstripe are located higher on the shell. For my repaint, I opted to give it a paint job that more closely matched the 217/226.
I wanted it to be somewhat glossy like my original 0566 is, but went a bit overboard. We’ll see how I make out when I get another good day to paint.

That’s what I do! I also find a flat coat final finish tends to minimize flaws as well, and on a model I think a flat coat looks better anyway, even if the prototype’s glossy.
Great job on those Alco’s Kevin! I don’t know if the ARR operated Alco FA’s but if they didn’t they should have, especially if they would have looked as good as yours!

KRM, I really like those ARR ALCos. It’s funny, because Lionel did make an Alaska Railroad ALCo FA in the postwar era… but only in HO. It was available in 1959 only. It came with set 5729, including the 0567 powered A and 0577 dummy B, with a matching 0817-225 caboose. You could also purchase the 0567 and 0577 seperately, as well as the 0587 dummy A unit. It doesn’t seem like the caboose was cataloged outside of set 5729, though.

I’m not sure who wore it better- the HO scheme or yours. Regardless, Lionel definitely missed an opportunity in my opinion, with not making an ARR EMD F or ALCo FA in the postwar era. Up to us now to correct past mistakes [swg]

Probably, but I suppose they figured the ARR switcher was enough.
A lot of what’s made then and now really depends on marketing strategy as in what are the most popular road names. The ARR switcher sold well enough but probably not as well as the ones with names from the Lower 48.
