weekend photo fun 4/21

hi guys…been working on some gons i got at the train show last week

SP gondola with a load of pipe

totally rebuilt this gondola…needed KADEE couplers, put on a set of atlas trucks
and installed some new brass foot irons…but for $3.00 it wasn’t a bad deal…chuck

Well, these were taken last weekend, but I won’t have anything else to put up, nor did I put these up last weekend.

Caught a remote job working the east end of the yard.

Also an eastbound K351.

The Finger Lakes Railway GP9 1702, here sitting at the Wyoming yard shops. This unit is returning to it’s home road after being leased to Marquette Rail.

And finally an HLCX SD40-2 on a CSX mixed freight.

Also won an Athearn RTR Amtrak P42 off ebay[:D]. Should be here in a few days.

I’ve been working on my yard this week. It’s got 5 tracks now. I’ll try to get pics sometime.

My project for this week was to try again on remotoring an old Mantua cast metal steam engine.

Things went wrong when I discovered that the tender was not as roomy as it appeared. The tender’s top half wouldn’t fit down over the motor.

I put the project on the shelf (along with many others) until I could visit a train show or two. I found the right size motor at the show in Springfield, Missouri. It fit perfect!

Now, I’m off and running. It runs much better, but I fear the drivers need tweaking.

Here’s my contribution for this weekends photo fun. This video was taken last weekend. A BNSF coal drag, easing through Jones Junction, MT. One big U-turn!

If you recieve an error message, just try again later.

I’m just finishing up a feed mill model built after the prototype that was in the San Fernando Valley. Still have a few details to add, like signs and some outside bins. Here is a webpage about it:

I was going through the local dollar store in my area and finally found the cell phone kits and dash mount. it cam with belt clip as well but did not think I would need that.

I open the pacage and took ou the two piece you would use to mount it to the dash. I glued the male end to the cab and the female end to the layout.

I though I was setting the world on fire. Had thought I had a good thing built and looked good. But not 3.8 secondes later it was on the floor and a little girl scurring away.
So now what can I do.
I looked at the belt clip piece of the package and wonderwhat I could do with it.
I ended up taking the belt clip piece off as in the pic below. filed the back smooth and I drilled A hole in it to mount it on the layout.

This has two bonus feature as well. one it has a lock on it so if you hit it it will not come off and the other thing is it will flip up so you can look at it without taking it off.

Total cost of the project the price of two cell phone kits. 2.30 Canadian. The smile on my face priceless. LOL

Spent most of the week getting kinks from the track. It is running better. Also refinning the logging camp and trying to learn to take good pics. Some efforts from yesterday.

Early morn

The log pile

Full moon

The more I do this the more I appreciate those of you are really good at it.

Really great pictures guys, Art love those trees!!

Ken.

Finally I feel like I’ve done something.

I set a few rocks. And I Iced some foam.

Hey Trainfreak, I was just in Brunswick on Thursday. Have you been to the Model RR museum and layout that they have?

lookin good Chip, nice work, progress is always a goog thing, and yours looks great.

great pics everyone else,

finally spent a couple of hours on the trestle, real workin is killin my hobby time

have fun & be safe
Karl

Brian024;

Yes, I have been to the museum, but it has been a few years since my last visit. I was in Brunswick on a Monday, so the museum was not open unfortunately. Well…Maybe next time.[tup]

As usual, lotsa good stuff to be found here!

Scott and Jonathon, nice proto shots! I’m glad the Finger Lake guys opted to go with the NYC lightning bolt scheme on their locos.

Karl, that is some trestle you’re building - I look forward to seeing it in its ‘native environment’[tup]

Chip, good to see you actively working on your layout again, I was concerned this back-to-school routine and business relocation might rob you of any hobby time.

Art - are those California Redwoods you’re modeling? They look great, but man they’re huge…!

Dragon Rider, glad you got that 4-4-0 working again - good job!

Here is what I just ‘finished’ (actually still needs to be weathered and hyper-detailed) - a home-grown propane supply center. Walthers once had a kit for this type of facility but they discontinued it ~5 years ago, so I had to depend on Plastruct and Evergreen for my raw materials. Probably the hardest part was modifying the Athearn Ford trucks at the left.

Brian024, it isn’t necessary to quote all of Scots original post (although I’m sure all of us enjoyed the photos). Please edit out all the material that does not add to what you want to say about his post for the following reasons:

  1. We have already seen them.

  2. It wastes bandwidth. (Well not a lot… but still)

  3. It tends to make those people who still have dial-up upset to have the thread take an extra 2 or 3 minutes to load so they can see what they have already seen.

  4. Those of us who have cable modems and DSL, etc. still have to scroll past the whole screen of the stuff we have already seen to find out what you are saying.

And besides, we’ve already seen them and can easily go back and see them again if we want. Therefore you don’t have to post them all again so we can see them again wether we want to see them again or not. Now, I could have quoted your post in my post to show you what I mean… but I didn’t.

Be courteus … [;)]

ukguy
do you cut the pieces yourself or do you buy them.
And what wood do you use

Jonathon, great to see the photo of FLRR 1702. Last time I saw her she was sitting in Geneva about a mile from where I live. Good to see Finger Lakes colors out and about. Ken, I’m not a big diseasal fan, but I do like the paint on the Finger Lakes Railroad locos. My LHS has decals of them in stock for some local MRs that model the Finger Lakes Railroad.

As usual, there is some great work in this thread. I haven’t a lot done recently that is photogenic enough to put up. Maybe next week.

I’ve been working on my cab-baggage for my fictional Amtrak Midwest service. I have the silver paint on it, but don’t have any pictures. I do have some pictures of final assembaly before paint, you’ll probably notice that in it’s former life it was an F40 in the old RTA paint scheme, but since it’s engine blew a while back I never really had a use for it so I thought it’d be cool to turn it into a cabbage.
