I’ve mostly completed my next On30 locomotive project:
This was a test fitting, to see how it looked on the chassis. The chassis is from an IHC Mikado with the lead and trailing trucks swapped out, and the rest I built. Owing to my Shapeways package getting stuck in New York, I had to improvise with what I had on hand.
Nice work guys! I really like on30.
I finished up my version of the Downtown Deco Fallberg Station kit. I replaced the front wall with wood and added Grandt Line doors. The white paint is chalk paint that my wife used on a project of hers.
I finished up two Kato NW2 decoder installs…
Hey, Chuck…I have a Kato NW2 that will need a decoder install. It looks like you did some cutting to make room for yours. What did you do for the install?
Russ, It is really easy to do. I just cut a chunk off the front of one of the frame halves, I used my Dremel to cut a small channel to run the light wires to the back of the loco, and wired everything to the front light board (just like a Kato N scale loco).
I didn’t need to do any other cutting on the frame.

Chuck, nice looking structure, and great work on that decoder install, there is not any room for a decoder in those NW-2’s without some cutting of the metal weight.

Red Caboose 1944 AAR Boxcar Kit, added a plug door from the scrap box along with styrene rod for the additional door rods and A-Line sill steps. Painted with Scalecoat II Armour Yellow, Boxcar Red and Silver paints and lettered with Champ Decals. These cars a XLI (Boxcar, Loader Equipped, Insulated) rebuilds of some old GATC and ACF regular boxcars for use in moving Campbell Soup products out of Napoleon, OH.

Eastern Car Works PRR G26 65’ Gondola Kit. Painted with Scalecoat II PRR Freight Car Red and lettered with Champ Decals. The Lehigh Valley (Controlled by the PPR) acquired 50 of the PRR G26 Mill Gons in the late 30’s which is why I painted it with PRR Freight Car Color. The Lehigh Valley was one of the railroads that serviced the Bethlehem Steel plants in the Bethlehem and Allentown areas so would need mill gons to transport finished steel products from these areas.

Jimmy: Thank you for starting the Weekend Photo Fun thread this week. I love to see the progress updates about your layout worl. The whole thing is coming along quite nicely.
Danny: Nioce job on the narrow aguge HOn30 locomotive.
Chuck: Great work on the Downtown Deco building kit. Your choices for paint on both the stone surtfaces and the wood look perfect. Also, great job on the decoder installation. I don’t have to do that to my NW2 because I am a DC Dinsaur.
Rick: The DETROIT TOLEDO AND IRONTOWN boxcar is beautiful. I used the plug door castings yiou sent me on a STRATTON AND GILLETTE boxcar. Thank you very much, it looks very good. Now I wish I would have added that extra door latch rodding.
This week I am going to chase this train I saw leaving the Centerville yard this morning. I did a “Train Chasing on the STRATTON AND GILLETTE” feature a couple of years ago in Weekend Photo Fun, and I have enough pictures to do it agaiin… hang on!

Currently, I am running a 5-car Great Northern passenger train. It is to represent one of the regional trains GN operated from and to St. Paul, MN. Destinations for those trains were Duluth,MN; Winnepeg, Canada; and Fargo, ND… My train has a mail car, baggage car, parlor-cafe car, and two coaches.
These pictures show the train departing my Union Station, rolling past Hinteland, and arriving in Prairie View.
The last photo shows one of my forced perspective roads which is wider in the foreground than in the background.
Garry: Thank you for the compliment. The boxcar was a project I completed months ago using some parts that Rick sent to me. I reposted it because he showed something similar in his post this week.
Your GREAT NORTHERN train leaving Union Station makes a stunning photograph.

Lots of outstadning work so far. I’ve been working on a project I’ve been thinking about for a long time. The results are mostly from hacking what I had on hand after I got inspired enough to proceed with it.
It’s based on a hacked Bachmann GE 70-tonner that I’d converted to HOn3. I detrucked one end, built a frame from hard brass, then built up an old LaBelle FW&D narrowgauge coach to make the carbody.

Jimmy: Thanks for kicking off WPF. You scene is coming along nicely.
Danny: That scratch / kitbash On30 loco is an ambitious project. Looking good.
Chuck: That small station is unique. I like the wood facing on the front.
Rick: Good looking new rolling stock. The city up the hillside is a neat effect.
Garry: Those are some realistic scenes and good photos.
Kevin: I like the antique vehicle in that scene.
Mike: Your railcar is also an ambitious project. It’s looking pretty neat.
I decided to try out my consist of GP30 / GP9 / GP35 which I had not run in awhile. I use the GP35 as a pusher just for fun. All works well, with the consist handling 32 cars (some with heavier loads) on the 2.4% grade. I am currently tweaking the sound settings. They all have LokSound Selects, with appropriate motor sounds for the loco type, so it is an interesting mix.

I was a little distracted with some computer-upgrade projects this week but I did manage to slap some decals on the Overland PRR, X29 at least.

Alan: I like the ghost train picture. The “real” Ghost Train was a man named Alan Rails. His parents were tragically killed in a grade crossing accident, and he became a superhero with the ability to summon a ghost train by blowing a magical train whistle and shouting “All Aboard”. Only he said “All Aboard” like Samuel L. Jackson would say it.
