Stan,
Thanks for the kind words. You’ve got some steamy scenes going on there, very nice!

Gidday Stan, can’t say it any better than Mike. [:D]
Cheers, the Bear.

Thanks for the comment about the scenery. I can see a geared lokie on this too, but this is actually a coal branch specifcially the C&O’s Hawks Nest branchline up Mill Creek in the New River gorge. Steep grades (4.2%) on a shelf between Mill Creek and a long (nearly 2 miles) cliff face that serviced 3 mines over its life.

Wow, that is a steep grade! What kind of steam worked that branch? I’m guessing maybe 2-6-6-2’s? Two of my sons love the C&O, probably because I worked on the track gang in Newport News back in the 1980’s. each one has a Kanawa, and my youngest of the two has two Rivarossi Alleghenies.

Steam on the HN branch was typically one of the venerable G class consolidations - which usualy handled a mixed from Thurmond - plus mine runs (also out of Thurmond) that used H-4 or H-6 mallets. There is a report that H-5’s were also found. With the grades, lots of curves (roughly 2/3 of the line was on a curve), few level locations , a run-away track and limited run-arounds it must have been an interesting operation to watch.
