If you like WPF, you probably will also like “Show me Something” This is a monthly thread with a simple theme. Someone posts a picture them says show me ----------, like show me an ATSF locomotive. The next person shows ATSF and adds their request,
Showme has been slowing down recently, so I thought I would mention it so some new folks would come over and have some fun with it. The rules are silmpe and are listed in the post on the first page every month. Basically it’s show me a picture of your layout, something in progress, a club layout, etc. If it is not fulfilled within an hour or so, anyone can post anything to keep things going with a new request. No links - pictures only. Here is a link to April Show Me http://cs.trains.com/TRCCS/forums/t/204573.aspx?PageIndex=1
Chad, What size speaker is that? I have a bunch of GP18s (in NKP, will be BN GP9s some day) and was ondering about sound for some of them.
Gappleg, Holy cow man; Nice job! By chance would a GE prime mover from a U30C or a C30-7 look the same?
Some stuff I’ve done or gotten while away:
Ex-CB&Q NE-12s. Soon to be painted in the BN Green and Yellow. I might keep one of the ones I didn’t remove the roofwalkas a canidate for a CBQ patch job.
I experimented with a cheap alternative to Robby P’s base coat. IIRC, he used thinned Testor’s flat white. I used thinned Rustoleum flat white; then applied a coat of valspar clear flat. Seems to work well; except for it days a few days to harden up to where it won’t rub off. A wash seems to work well to lighten it up if the white goes too far
The dreaded Front Range/McKean Centerbeam kit; 1 BN and 1 UP. I have 4 others. A CP that I completed (no decals nessecary), a Milwuakke which isn’t pictured, and 2 undecs. The undec are providing spare parts. The MILW, BN, and UP need decaling. I’m just a bit apprehensive about decaling…
A GP15 I got a bit ago
I’ll probably do some scrap loads for my gons later.
That guy is a Digitrax unit, it measures (on my caliper):
1.455" Long 36.90mm
0.563" Wide 14.30mm
0.390" Tall 9.90mm
8 Ohm Ported
Model: DS1436-8 Sound Decoder Speaker
On my model I am doing some serious customization, as I was able to get an undecorated one that did not have ‘almost everything’ ‘glued down’, but some hard disassembly did occur. ;(
I doubt that this configuration may fit the factory unit. The 20x piece shutters/louvers assembly on the standard GP18 shells take a lot of room. I just measured the original clearance & the Weight & it has the cast voids set at 0.510" or 12.96mm wide.
I removed them (for future projects) and am using cut down to fit Cannon SD40-2 Vertical grilles to replace the thick working shutters. Also I removed almost an eighth of an inch from the top of the weight for the Tsunami, it also will not fit in the factory shell as is (the shutters again).
My Goal is to have the Cannon parts be thin enough on the inide of the shell to bypass the the Tsunami (Width 0.654" or 16.60mm) & I already know they will miss the speaker.
By planting the Cannon parts midway in the openings, & then the factory grilles over them, I hope to maintain a thin shell interior profile & a desirable look.
I am not sure what to call it yet, It is not really going to be a GP10 (Generally perhaps) but it has the original nose chopped, & a 35 series Cannon cab happening right now. I also convinced myself to try a new freelance paint scheme on this one too. Although my Ideas sound good to me, I really want to see it when it’s done. The paint scheme will be tastefull, unlike a couple other wild ones I have not published, heh heh…
(Anyone) Please PM me if you have more questions, (don’t want to clog up WPF), I would have added more pix, but I found the shell was Primered, & it is cu
Chad: Whoa, buddy, that loco looks heavy enough to go right THROUGH my trestle, LOL!
Been spending time resuscitating some of my old Akanes with new rare earth magnets. Just finished re-motoring my AC-8. Ten of those little magnets and a formerly nice-running steamer has suddenly turned into a MONSTER!! Starts crawling at about 2smph and it’s so powerful that I can use it to raise and lower the garage door, LOL!
Have to order some more of these magnets–I have some other old open-frame motors to revive, LOL!
Tom,
Many Thanks!!!
Say, maybe that my Geep may bring you some Garage Door Panels to replace those that got ‘pinged’ by them super duper Akanes! I’ll manifest it Nov 1st, as you want them dents on Haloween, -as if violence & evil creatures were happening in that garage!! (As they seem to be now!!!)
Thanks again, actually I was ashamed about all the weight I converted into gon loads, -in the form of ‘chips’ off the mill. (At least these didn’t melt through my shoes & burn the top of my foot! like steel does! -I can turn them smoking blue chips off that unit!)
Actually, I was not happy about losing all that weight that I was removing from that feller, but, But, I had to make some trade-off for the noisemaker… Since it will primarily be a yard & short-line loki, that is fine, besides, I tune my rolling stock, & so far can’t apply antyhing more than 10 feet, so that girly loco can & will pull-em… So far; I’ve replaced the gears (all cracked & out of gauge), gave the motor bearings the LaBelle 'taste" (& it really ROARED back to life & has POWER now!), greased the drives, the shafts, & the altered bolsters (direct soldered, not Blue Box Arched metal no more), Gauged & set the wheels & the important bearings in the truck guides. Over all, it should work great.
I still think that Akane would really put the WHOMP on my 'lil GP, (as the my GP’s sound card cries UNCLE! )
Nice work Tom!!
Even the still picture looks powerfull!!!
Do you need 9 foot garage doors in a Georga Pacific box car? Please advise, ha hah, hee heee.
Hope to have more GP18-ish pix tomorrow… (PM me if interested in that project).
A good start to WPF guys. Keep the photos an ideas coming,
Here is one from the BRVRR.
NYC RDC 53 prepares to board a few commuters as NYC #1855 passes on the outer mainline of the BRVRR layout. The RDC is a Proto 100 model. The F7 is an Athearn BB model modified and refinished to resemble the prototype.
Keep things going guys. You always make this the best thread of the week.
Here are moch-up/progress shots of the GP18x build. It demonstrates where I am headed with this project. Had an issue with my CA going bad so there are not many PE & other details on it just yet. I also left one inertial filter grille off, because “the borrower’s” took it, & it shows how I put in SD40-2 Vertical grilles to replace the very 3D working ones in the factory unit. The rear ones did not cover the entire length of space & two were joined & there is a piece of white styrene strip acting as a bridge. This allows a very little o’plenty room for the new DCC Sound board & speaker components I have added. It has a Cannon Cab with the 4 Side Window option. The chopped hood may be a couple of scale inches too tall, but I’m sticking with it. I covered the 3/4 hole from the original headlight with a light casing cover plate by BLMA, they are pretty handy for this. So far, this is a good project, & I am enjoying building & customizing it.
Finally, I have something to show. I’ve been working on Mooseport, a small corner of the layout adjacent to the carfloat terminal.
The approach to the carfloat is all street running. I’m using the “Electric Avenue” track and cobblestone sheets from Proto 87. Above, a Bachmann 0-6-0T crosses a low bridge over the old mill canal that arcs through Mooseport.
There’s no water in the canal yet, but you can see the engine crossing the bridge in the background, between two sections of the brick mill.
