I have finally dusted off the roundhouse project that I began back in January! For some reason I was lacking the motivation to get the lighting installed… not any more [:)]

Hope everyone had a great week and got a lot done. Myself, it was mostly non-RR things, but there’s been a decided shift indoors and more towards really great RR stuff. In fact, this goes beyond pics and into some interesting video.
My friend Thomas asked if I would take video of him operating on the 1:1 at the Monticello Railway Museum. Cab ride for really cheap and all I need to do is run the camera? Heck yeah! This first clip is mostly instructional and then the run starts near the end. Thomas is operating a MILW Road NW-2, 1649, as seen here.
After some instruction by the crew on the last passenger run of the day, we had the raod to ourselves. In this second, lengthier video you get to see some, but not all of the collection as we ride through the steamy Central Illinois countryside.
Our lead engineer turned out to be a fellow who used to work at the now long-gone but findly remembered Hammer’s Hobbies in Decatur, IL. They were my go-to shop back when I had a job, but exited sometime around 2000. Ed, the roundhouse lighting is coming along fine, a little bright to me.
Mike, cab rides are a great thing, also neat if you can run it yourself, which I got to do a couple of times.
Since I am not doing much modeling right now I took a picture of my new Athearn FP7’s that I got on sale serving as emergency power for the Broadway Limited.

Ed, that roundhouse is really impressive! Great videos and pics Mike-- I especially like the old Soo Line caboose. Rick, nice motive power (and the setting is great, too.)
Sometime in the last few months I put up an 11-foot shelf to serve as a semi-permanent space for my RSL (rural switching layout)-- the layout itself, unfolded, spans eight feet and there’s room for cassette staging on one end.
Finally having made a home for it, maybe the next thing on the docket is working on suitable lighting and backdrops. Scenery moves along slowly and steadily.

This week I completed another factory building for Boothbay Railway Village. It is another in the series that hides the main line tracks on the left side of the layout. Getchel Polar Ice makes ice in blocks and cubes and is also a cold storage warehouse.

I have been working on a way to hide a hole in the backdriop. it turns out a road bridge makes the perfect structure to hide the hole. I made a pattern of the location where the bridge was going before I went on vacation. I had some free time while on vacation and built the majority of the bridge from 0.040" styrene and a few other plastruct styrene shapes.
The railings were done at home on the CNC router. I wanted to have the curved railing and tried a couple different things before i got them right. The round balls on top are sewing pin heads. I painted the whole structure concrete gray and MOW green for the metal beams.

I think the automatic exposure on the camera make the lights look brighter in the photos, Rick. I agree, though, all the roundhouses I’ve ever been in were dark, grimy affairs. The Nickel Plate, though, seems to have had some of the brightest-lit ones, it seems. Looking at photos in the John B. Corns book NKP Publicity Photos, Vol. 1 shows several brightly lit interiors with fluorescent lighting, no less.
The props do not turn. If it had been me, I would have cut some acetate or clear styrene disks for the props. Bob installed a speaker under a shelf near the plane with an engine sound effect.
The “Lighthouse Railway” is a pending layout project of mine. It will be a British OO scale narrow gauge micro layout in two boxes, showing an Edwardian era seaside tramway connecting a lighthouse on the beach with a small port town.
So far, I have a small tramway loco, an open coach, a closed coach and an open freight car. Not to forget a flag stop with a shelter. All of it scratchbuilt by my Japanese friend Junichi!
The detail is simply awesome!
With the outside temperatures having dropped back into my comfort zone of 70F, I was able to do some gardening on my tinplate layout.
Ed, Thanks for the WPF start-up and the shots of your lighted roundhouse, hooray for LEDs.
Renegade1c, Your highway overpass, (and Mike’s in last week’s WPF) are inspirational modeling and fine examples of a good way to hide the ol’ tracks coming out of the wall. Also a great stage on which to display various traffic scenes, I can’t help but envision a bicycle race with accompanying team cars and motos.
Seems that the “Bandit” and “Frog” might look at home aboard this glitzy Pontiac.

Mel: There is no replacement for genuine Kolinsky Sable. Those Soviet Block weasels sure know how to grow great paintbrush bristles. There was a time for about six months they were unavailable.
