This is a Tichy single-sheathed boxcar I’ve been working on. I did the underside brake detail months ago, but I put the project aside while I worked on my tannery scenery. Also, I dreaded all those grabs. Yesterday I took a snow day, stayed home and just got 'er done.
I spent 5 hours, pretty much nonstop, drilling tiny holes, breaking #80 drill bits and installing grabs. This car will be painted and decalled for “Hide Service Only” to serve the tannery.
Great work everyone. I have finished the first part of the layout project (still have to add large plate girder bridge). The next phase is re-orientating the coal mine and extending the associated three tracks.
On drill bits, a steady hand, and not forcing the pin vise helps bits last longer, but what do I know! A bit can last me a month, or sometimes I’ll go through 2 day! Confirming that I always don’t have a steady hand, and I do get in a hurry!.
My contribution for photos, The CN’s Waukesha, WI sub, main line, is lined with long out of service power and telegraph poles, lines still on, most broken, and hanging in the over growth along the ROW. I thought it would make an interesting detail on my main line:
Looks like the Bear got corraled by OT. Hope all is well and they let him have a day off soon[A]
Rick,
That D&H gon is a tasty scheme. They always did things right, for a little road.
Mr. B,
Sounds like some of my projects…they need to age a little as part of the process. I often do this and it really makes it easier to go back and do those tedious things when you wait until the mood hits to do 'em.
Garry,
The sky really adds to the depth of that great scene.
Curt,
Amazing progress. That’s coming together very nicely. I especially like the farmstead.
GGOOLER,
That’s one way to deal with those pesky bright LEDs. Give resistors a chance, though, as you really can’t go wrong with them and the available range of brightness is much greater than you can achieve with markers. That said, those dock doors look great with the back illumination. Then you start thinking about what goes in that lit space…I’ve got a situation like that right now which needs at least one forklift and some pallets of goods.
Jimmy,
Looks like they tipped that car on the side in a derailment and the rains haven’t worked their magic yet.
Mike,
Nice work on those downed lines.
re: Breaking those tiny bits, practice helps, but even then I can go weeks without breaking one, then have a run of bad luck within a few minutes. Always carry backup, is all I can say…[:(]
How about some pics?[:D]
Reloaded my supply of Richmond Controls/Ulrich Models SMD LEDs and made up a couple of outdoor lights for the engine service area.
Train time in Durango can be busy, even early in the morning.
Rick, it’s the steady hand part. When you hit 2/3 century, the steadiness just is not there sometimes [8-|] ya need them glasses and maybe a magnifier as well
Thanks …I took the cast resin floor that came with the car and thru it in the trash can…cut wood boards for a new floor…as I added boards one by one I cut and distressed the boards with my knife and a wire brushed…also I have a pin vise with an Atlas track nail I filed a point onto to press nail holes and such on some of the boards.
George, I know I just hit 66 this last December. I don’t know if it is the bowling that keeps my hands strong and steady or what. But I have had to take my glasses off, even with the bifocals in order to do any modeling or decaling. Luckily I still don’t need a magnifier!
If it was me, I’d of recycled that resin kit floor into the junk box. Never know when something like is handy to build a quick fence – split it in two – etc.
Then again, hoarding seems to run in my family, so maybe not wise to take advice from me on that…[:-^]
