Well, I got the jump this week. Looking to see some great stuff
Fantasy monongahela GP40X unit. Started as undecorated Atheran unit. The beacon is a Details associate part. I need to cut new windows out and put a decoder into it.

Gidday All, I’d decided that my drip fed progress photos of the ferry’s railings were getting about as exciting as watching paint dry, though if I was watching paint drying I’d be a happy man cos it would have meant that I’d got the painting done!
Alas events were to conspire against any painting progress; in fact I’m typing this one handed. Still I took the time to visit the local club where it looks like the Club Captain has successfully managed to get the “modellers” who left back on board with the undertaking he’d keep us free from the politics that caused us to leave in the first place. I must admit it was good to see some of the chaps again.
So to this week’s photo, after the club a couple of us went around to a fellow exiles home to discuss the turn of events and to view his latest acquisition. Now I don’t comment on locomotives that I’m unfamiliar with, but I can see why ffolkes would wish to model the NYC with this fine looking, and running, offering from Broadway Limited, though personally the smoke feature is far too gimmicky for my taste. Sorry about the poor lighting.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is WPF?
Weekend Photo Fun
Good morning from cloudy and drizzly Northeast Ohio.
Jimmy, like the GP40X except for the weathering, a personal choice of mine.
Bear, I have one of those also, but a Key Brass one without all the sound and action dodads, one of my favorite engines.
Nothing finished this week, so you are stuck with some new pictures of my ore hauling ALCO’s this week.
And as an added attraction a little prototype action!
On my way to work on Monday this week I stumbled upon NKP 765 on a ferry move back to its home base in Fort Wayne, IN. It was on the Cuyhoga Valley Scenic Railway (Ex-B&O Line) and I followed it to a point where I could get ahead and get this shot with my I-Phone, I then followed it all the way to Akron where my office is.
Thanks for looking
Rick Jesionowski
Jimmy … I like the GP40X
Bear … The NYC streamlined 4-6-4 is a classic.
Rick … Always good to see the Alcos in action… NKP 765 looks great !
Im sorry about that guys, I fixed the title just now. I was half asleep when I posted the title.
Jimmy … Thanks for changing the title. … Half asleep? … I’m like that much of the time. … LOL … Cheers.

Working at the Grain Elevator
At Boothbay Railway Village one of our volunteers has started design and installation of a signals system. Here are a couple of pictures of what is in progress:
The signal bridge will control trains on the 2 track main line, the 2 lines to/from Portland, the cross-over to access the yard (in the background) and the siding by the edge of the layout. This bridge is still very much a work in progress.
The top part of the 2 aspect signal on the right will control the main line; the lower part will indicate if a turnout in the tunnel is set to the hidden reversing loop. It will turn green and the top will turn red. The signal on the left will control if trains run in the reverse direction on the outer track. Both show yellow instead of green because the controls for only one block beyod the tunnel have been installed . When the bock beyond that is installed it will show green unless a train occupies that block.
Great pics, everyone. Rick’s pacing shot of 765 was particularly tasty.
Preparing for next weeks ops session on Wednesday evening. My open invitation to list members to stop in still stands, whether to operate or just visit. Last Friday, fellow list member Jeff P. happened to be in town to attend the football game and watch his grandson march and play in the band at halftime (the Illini even pulled off a win! and the band will be marching in the Macy’s parade at T-giving) and made arrangements to stop by for a visit. He enjoyed himself by all accounts.
My big project for the week was a simple one, adding fuel tanks at various points to help enliven the petroleum products traffic. Here’s the mostly finished results.
The big one serves the Gramps terminal, holding diesel that’s pumped up the hill at night when crude isn’t flowing downhill to serve the needs of the oil field for exploration, construction production. Its core was a standard 2" wide tape roll. I cut .010" styrene as a wrapper, sprayed it with 3M 77, then overlaid that base with narrower strips to represent the welded bands that make up the tank.
Here’s one of several smaller tanks at the Crater Lake Stone Quarry, also for diesel.
Camp 13 also got a portable tank on skids, like at the quarry.
Finally, beside several more tanks on the Cascade Branch, a tank was tucked in at the Union Trust Mine in Chattanooga up on the old Silverton RR to serve it and the tramway that connects to several other mines.
ImageShack is weird this morning, so if pics are messed up, I’ll try to fix it la
Some awesome stuff this week so far. I’m looking forward to seeing more. Most of what I’ve done on my layout this past week has been repaiing a few turnouts. But I did take delivery of these handsome Broadway Limited E7s after four months of preordering. They were worth the wait. Here they are bombing through Kittanning Point on their way to Altoona
Doing a clinic tomorrow at a meet and also here is a P-7 4-4-2 on the move.
Great start to the weekend folks!
I have finally gotten back to doing a bit of hobby work. Been a very long Spring and Summer and no time for the nhobby. I am building a through girder bridge that will cross over the lower tracks in the area I have been rebuilding on the layout. I have one side of two of the four girders I need to build this. It will be on a curve on a return loop.
Here is the stone foundation it will be attached to when finished:
I have a long way to go with this project!!!

Great stuff Fellows!
Jimmy, the E-L gray looks just right for your Monongahela beast.
Bear, I agree about the “choo-choo” smoke, it’s the first thing I disable on any locos that have it. But ain’t that Century J-3 just sweet!
Rick, I’ve spent quite a bit of time in that valley in my day! That pacing shot of the 765 is outstanding. Bravo!
Garry, Always a treat to see your “big city” passenger scenes. I’ve always loved riding on the “Race Track” and blowing through all those Chicago suburbs at close to 90 per!
Hi, Ken! Good to see you here, That’s a moody sunset shot you captured there…
I admire the way your signals look, George.
Mike, You spent the week getting tanked? [B] Way to go!
GP Man, Can’t get enough Pennsy action! Looks great.
That’s classic Reading there, Casey. How many other railroads had that graceful arch on the cab window? Nice trademark.
Howmus, that stone work looks great! I would guess each stone is individually set in place? Sure looks it…
My reward for the week arrived yesterday in the form of the Capitol Limited’s High Dome car from Walthers!
What a piece of fine passenger equipment! I opted for the “de-luxe” version with lighting and Preiser figures.
Just check out those floodlights!
And here’s a going away shot…
My hat is off to Walthers for making some of the finest examples of passenger equipment out there today (yes, BLI, Rapido, MTH and others are good, too) compar
Hi Ed,
Thanks. The cut stone wall is made from plaster “stone” strips from New England Brownstone. They stain up nice and are useful for many places on my layout.

Good stuff again this week guys. Keep them coming.
Bear - The Drefuss Hudsons were a NYC icon in the 20’s and 30’s. They headed many of the roads premiere trains.
Rick Love the bridge scene. In 2013 my eldest grandson and I went to the Cuyahoga Valley RR “Smoke in the Valley” excursion on the NKP 765. There is a video of the loco in action on my website.
Garry - love the Burlington passenger trains.
GPain - I commend you. Signaling is beyond my ken.
Mick L - Some great scenes there. Thanks for sharing.
GP9_Man - Love the PRR E7s.
Ed - Good looking B&O rolling stock.
From the BRVRR:
Three NYC steam locomotives. L-R, Niagara 4-8-4, Hudson 4-6-4, and Mikado 2-8-2. All are BLI locomotives. Only the Niagara has a smoke generator which is seldom used. All are great performers and sound great.
Keep the photos and ideas coming everyone. Thanks to you WPF is always the best thread of the week.
Jimmy, Thanks for the WPF and GP40 roll-out.
Intentions were to take a break from modeling and layout construction and operate some trains, but the proverbial blank canvas was tuggin’ at my elbow. Soon cardboard was a flyin’, metal rules were a flashin’, the razor knife a slashin’ and hot glue gun squirtin’. If only building the actual models could be done with the same abandon and ease.
Thanks to all, regards, Peter
I agree, all that design and work is done by Bob Holland, another one of our volunteers. All I do is watch it as the lights change colors as the trains pass by…
Spent some time installing a Wow Diesel Decoder in my older Athearn U Boat
