Good luck working with the tiny wires of the Surface Mount LEDs

they drove me crazy because the wires are long and very springy

I trick i finally used to hold the wires still was to use some masking tape

sticky side up laid on the work bench and stick all but the bare ends of the LED to the tape

Leaving the ends free to wrap around the resistor and attaching wire to apply solder

Kinda like having an extra set of hands

Yes, quite true. I can now appreciate the skills that the micro-surgeon possesses!\

It should lay flat in the bottom of a Tichy barrel and drop straight through the layout top… hopefully! I might try a few very fine fiber-optic “sparks”.

Thanks again for the idea [Y]

This is not exactly related to WPF, but it does concern the last couple of posts.

Ngineering sells a neat little aid for soldering fine wires to LEDs. It can be mounted in a vise and it holds both the LED and the wire in the right place so all you have to do is touch the iron and solder to the fluxed joint:

Heres a very short video of some flicker testing i’m doing

You can see how small the red SM LED is in comparison to the others

My friend Laurie McLean has several useful videos on working with SMD LEDs. Here’s the basics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmoM6ak35_8

Personally, I chicken out and buy mine with the leads attached. Good idea on using tape to hold things down while working with those squirrelly things. And thanks for the tool tip, Dave, that might just work for me.

Small World indeed Laurie McLean is where i get my inspiration for

my animation projects He really is a Master Modeler

Much can be learned from him FOR THE FORCE IS STRONG IN HIM~!

TCS slected him as one of their beta testers for the Wow decoder ever though he lives a world away in the land down under
