Since the forum upgrade is coming next week, this will be our last Photo Fun with our love-'em-or-hate-'em stars. I’m starting a bit early, because I’ll be away on vacation, but I wanted to get in my last pics…
This is my version of DPM’s Goodfellow’s Hall. I turned it into a five-and-dime store which used to be everywhere:
I bought some “Instant Rust” at Michael’s art supply store. This is my first experiment with this stuff. I weathered up my old True-Scale MOW cars. First, the way the cars looked before Instant Rust:
Instant Rust is a two-part application. The first is called “Instant Iron.” It’s a paste which is a suspension of very fine iron filings. That gets applied with a brush. They recommend 2 coats, but I think 1 is enough for most applications. I let that dry overnight, and then applied the thin “Instant Rust” activator. It’s a chemical reaction, so it takes a couple of hours to get the full effect.
Stinky nasty chemicals, by the way. Work outdoors if at all possible.
I spent a couple of evenings this week sorting out the car cards for my freight stock, so it was only fitting to put them to use as soon as possible.
Here’s some photos of my first operating session after the hand operation. The layout was devoid of all stock and these are the first 2 trains to appear.
IHB #309 operating the East end yard -
Baltimore and Ohio 0-6-0 #386 with a cut of cars in the West end loop
And finally, an operator’s eye view of the layout - when sitting on his stool, of course
Mr B, great shots, I’m off to Michaels to get some more Caspia and balsa for tree making so I am definately going to look for that stuff, awesome results.
Great yard shots as always Jon.
Trees have started growing in my kitchen !!! here my first three pines I made this morning, two healthy and one looking like its dead/dieing.
Looking up through the trees (kinda)
And finally a little closer seeing the bark texture and dead limb details.
Great pics, keep them coming.
Have fun & be safe,
Karl.
Here’s a shot of one of the Hudson River & Western’s doodlebugs traversing the “cut” at Jacksboro, NY, about to have a meet with a westbound peddler freight. Above, on the highway bridge, grandpa and grandson watch the unfolding rail pageant beneath.
Great… I am all cought up on my work and it is Friday…So I’m just goofing off. I painted this this week, it is an old Tyco and doesn’ t run well at all so I thought I woult try the painting thing (need more practice)
So I guess this an “All-Star” weekend…? Great work everyone as always! I have been puttering with the gorge on the layout. Got it painted and the water poured.
Since I am waiting for some styrene to come in at the local LHS, I did some wiring. Dropped some track feeders to the main bus:
My week’s posting shows my layout progress and fun this week! The first shot is the Hawksbill Station Yard with the wiring complete and the control panel added. Now it’s time for the ballast.
I also went on a train chase with a friend this week. We followed the Missouri & Northern Arkansas RR’s Cotter South Local. The local leaves Cotter Yard and travels south toward Calico Rock for a meet with the Batesville North Local. They exchange cars at Crestwell and return to their own respective yards.
Lots of nice stuff here, keep 'em coming! Mine won’t fit in here, I had to get a new website to host 'em all. Check out my thread “A steel mill with a model railroad attached”.
