Weekly Photo Fun, 05 - 09 August, 2011

I am starting to learn how to take photos with natural backgrounds (diorama set up in a field overlooking the Beaufort Range). If you look closely, you can see the horizon on the diorama just above the pilot beam, about where the far air pump fairing’s bottom edge is.

You Rock, da Best! Oof Da!!!

I may still toss a photo up, but it is not your Class! (JK) Excellent Shot!

Keep them coming!!! WOW!!!

This is a shot of my “Car Topper” & in this case it is a Kibri JCB C4X kit on an ExactRail gondola… I added ‘cleats’ to the JCB to make it a ‘Car Topper’ & painted the JCB unit, although, I’m not 100% happy with the paintjob…

The JCB Backhoe is a just a little small for this project (but - what I had on-hand), I did not have a MotorArt Volvo, or a GHQ JD to test with… I posted a few trial shots a couple weeks ago & finally found the lil’ JCB kit that was ‘404’ on my initial search… I knew the kit was moulded in the wrong colors, (it was a ‘special edition’ moulded in dark green) so, I painted it in a mix of a CAT-like yellow… From a distance it looks fairly good, but up close there are tone differences & it is not so pretty good. Reason being, I airbrushed everything on the sprue, as I knew that I could not do any painting on it as an assembled unit. This led to mis-matched tones & coverages, but in the end, it is not all ‘THAT’ bad, so it will fly… If it was one of the Yellow ones, it may have looked really sharp… I guess the pictures tell it best…
The Exact Rail Gondola was an SP unit, that I patched to IC&E. ‘Eagle Eyes’ may notice something, (thinking cleverly), I used an old sheet of Numberboard decals as my patch backrounds. I added dry transfers & trimmed (the end [small] sets), & applied them to the unit. I also attempted some fine airbrushing over the SP logo plate, attempting to replicate someone with a paint can, haphazardily blanking out the ‘Southern Pacific’ lettering on the plate. I think instinct took over & I pulled away the airbrush, fading & blending everything more evenly than intended. I also added appropriate details, like airlines & cut bars to the gondola…
Here is a Link to the real “Herzog Car Topper” for your enjoyment!

Great start for the thread, good work guys. I finished scenery on another section of my layout, which I call The Loops, this week. Here are a couple of broader view photos to show the overall look

Great looking start!!

Here’s a used but not abused boxcar!

Dang Crandell, you have a ocean and mountain view? Looks lovely.

Ken

Instead of my usual group of freight cars, here is an Atlas RS-32 that I detailed and painted for the New York Central, here is the finished engine except for the number boards which will be added when I get the decals.

Most of the details were acquired with the Cal-Scale Kit except for the two Blat Horns mounted on the long hood. Microscale provided the decals, and the numberboards will be Shellscale. There is also a Details Associates Bell under the Walkway.

Thanks for looking!

Rick[2c]

Rick, your work bench must be quite a busy place. Your rolling stock and locos are being built and upgraded at breakneck speed! Nice work.

This is a background scene in a tight space. The SD7 is only 4 1/2" from the backdrop. Each of my SD7’s and SD9’s has added details to look more like CB&Q units. The details are extra headlights, sunshades, spark arrestors, and antennas. As information, I made the pair of verticle tanks to the left from a scrapped 62’ Athearn tank car which I cut in half and added details.

Crandell seems to have set the bar very high this week. That is an outstanding photo, diorama, and scenery.

Great pictures!

Crandell, you have to look twice to recognize the model with your picture!

Wolfgang

Thanks for all the generous comments about my photo. It has been followed by equally good ones, if not better considering they are all or mostly models shot indoors. [8D]

Keep up the pace, fellas.

Lots of great photos so far!

Got a new camera. One that I can manually change the aperture, shutter speed, etc.
Also got a tripod. Very excited about figuring out my camera & getting some good shots in the future.

These are from my 23"x41" Mt. Coffin & Columbia River layout (n scale).

Thanks for looking.

Here is my current project on a new layout, which is a work in progress. I’m building a 3’ long trestle and recently ran a 4-4-0 pulling two scratch built box cars across the preliminary construction. Lots of work left to do, but it is all fun work. [swg]

Very nice work on display this week!

Heartland - I really like what you did with that SD7. Great work and a nice scene.

Union Pacific making a visit:

Finaly some pics of my version of Skid row. A few shots. More next week maybe.

Oatmans is the FSM kit that changed the way I thought of buildings

MA Bruce… Thanks for the comment. I like your GP20 and your scene.

Crandell … Your sky looks very real! [:D]

Everybody … Great photos!

WOW!, just freakin’ WOW! Each week it gets tougher keeping up with you guys (and gals).

Anyway, I have not been doing much the last couple of weeks, but I did manage to add to the shots from a few weeks ago. Here’s #8148 in the same area, this time the track is ballast, added some farm scenery, the rocks are from the back yard.

Reviewing my opening post, I see I used the term “backdrop”. I should have said ‘natural background’. I set up the diorama on a country roadside overlooking the Beaufort Range on Vancouver Island, so the sky should look about as nice as it gets. Thank-you for the comment, Garry.
