Was traveling I-24 Northbound North of Nashville several weeks ago and passed several low boy trailers, with escorts, that were carrying objects with GE identification emblozoned upon it…They appeared to be about 30/40 feet long, 10/12 feet wide and about 14 feet high with about a 1 foot deep step on about half the roof of the object. I have no real idea of what they were, however a wind turbine naccele would not be out of the realm of possibility.

Sounds about the correct size…the nacelles are almost square, but taper some towards the rear, with soft, round edges and corners…

I notice a while back the U-HOUNTW was running thru here. The list showed all windmill parts on special flatcars. (Houston-Northtown)

I saw one in Cleburne ,Tx.back in early June.on a BNSF train w/2 test cars…I wandered where they came from and where they were gonig…Videomaker

I think it would be great fun to see a blade train going through Rochelle or Mendota, especially since there is a HUGE blade farm about halfway between the two towns, visible from Interstate 39 near Shabbona.

Why doesn’t this sort of thing get into the news?

Why did UP run these and the log trains up the Coast Line? How about routing some on the Bakersfield and Fresno lines? I did get to see a couple of the empty log trains heading back south, so they appearently routed the empties this way. Hopefully if they are headed to the Altamont Pass area they will come this way. I did get to see a regular mixed freight with two blades on September 10, 2004. They were on flatcars JTTX 961192 and RCLX 105500.

Danny,
That was one of our from the Port of Houston…Had two Santa Fe test cars on the rear to check the route.
Keep you eyes peeled, and camrea ready, we should be running one of these every month…our trainmaster said we will get about 10 more of them.

Eric…
Once it leave the Metroplex complex, I have no idea how the route these things…

When I worked for Continental cable in Palm Desert one of our microwave sites was on top of Whitewater Hill. That hill is covered with windmills. Most of them were the size you are talking about but there were several that dwarfed them. They had around 150’ foot blades and stood twice as tall. You have to see these things up close to truely appriciate there size. And those were not silent. It is really a trip trying to work around them. After a while it feels like your on an acid trip.

I was out at West Palm Springs a month or two ago and I noticed they were replacing a lot of the older smaller ones on the desert floor with newer bigger ones. Mabee thats where they are taking that train. It’s hard to say. There are several places out here that have windmill farms like Altamont pass and the hills between Mojave and Monolith.

Ed,
What I said in the email was that I got one of those trains at Cleburne,Tx.in early June…Got picture and videoed the entire train as it was leaving…It was unusual ,I guess that’s what we like about this addiction we have,Haaa…Me and a friend got several shots and a lot of video footage that day of unusual trains…Let me know when another one is coming toward Ft.Worth and me or my friend will be ready…Thanks,Danny

didnt know chessie had turbines!!! cool pic though.

There are supposed to be 7 of these 67 car trains from Houston that Canadian Pacific will deliver to Hak in Saskatchewan to build 84 windmills at Rush Lake,Saskatchewan…

If you want to see what these things look like put together, go to mudchickens post on page one and click on the link.
We have one stashed in the docks right now, waiting on one more ship…

Yes History Channel had a show about them a few days back & they come from Germany as you said. They are now making super size ones that will produce 10MWs of electricity. According to the program present they max out at 5MWs. [:o)][:p]
