I may be losing my memory but I seem to remember that both the east and west humps at Enola were removed a few years ago and that the east hump classification trackage was torn up and the west trackage converted into a level operation.
I passed the yard the other day and noticed that the west hump was back in operation with what looked like a new hill and control tower.
I think that I got my answer from another source. The west hump at Enola was refurbished a couple of years ago as part of the NS strategy to allocate car classification workload between Conway and Enola – Conway handling mostly westbounds and Enola handling mostly eastbounds. Enola is expected to hump between 1200 and 1500 cars daily versus the 125 or so they were doing when the hump was out of operation and everything was flat track. I’m assuming that this number includes inbounds from Baltimore and Hagerstown. Not sure how NS is handling outbounds to those destinations but suspect that’s being done on the flat tracks east of the west yard down by the river.
I’ve been away from the forum for a few days…ironically,I’m staying at a Hotel near Enola Yard at this moment…The West Hump was reactivated a couple of years ago…Flatswitching and hump operations occur simultaneously at Enola now…There is a hotel that I stay at occasionally that is directly across from the Yards where you can watch the hump operation from an upstairs front room…Quality Inn Riverview at Enola…For railfans interested in lodging in the area, choosing this, or, there is also another hotel in Wormleysburg, a few miles South of Enola where the NS Port Road runs right past called the Econolodge. Its where I’m at as I’m writing this on dialup…At any rate, Enola Yard may also eventually see reactivation of the East Hump classification area if business and traffic warrants.
