I notice on my maps that there is a road that follows the BNSF as it approaches the Flathead Tunnel and then it appears to go up over the tunnel and then on to Libby, Mt. Is this road paved and easily driven and can one access the east and west potrals of the tunnel ? Can one follow a train in this area or is the road too slow ? Thanks for any info.
It is paved, single lane and heavily utilized by the logging industry. The road offers great access to the railroad and both ends of the tunnel though they are fenced and on railroad property. No services such as food, lodging or gasoline are availble between Libby and Eureka so do not go in short of supplies. You will find signs with numbers like C.B. 17 which will tell you which CB channel the loggers are using to avoid running into each other on blind corners or at the tops of hills. If you plan on spending time there you may want to purchase a cheap one at a garage sale before you go. They can be real handy.
The trains are generally moving too fast chase but there is enough traffic to make up for that. There are some really nice photo locations in this under photographed area.
