Does anyone know where I can find a complete map of the WSLCo’s route? I’ve only been able to find a map of the yard at Tuolumne. Has anyone seen it perhaps in a book? Thanks - Anthony
Last of the 3 foot Loggers by Allan Krieg, published by Golden West Books, printed in 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1966 (and perhaps later but that’s as late as it gets in my book)
I’ll match you and raise you to July 1971 (sixth printing, hard cover.)
The end papers are isometric topographical views with the West Side route shown in relation to the mountains it penetrated. Pages 56 and 57 show the same thing plan view superimposed on USGS topo maps. (Any resemblance to a plate of spaghetti is purely a result of topography.)
In addition to those maps, and another detailing the mill (and the later West Side and Cherry Valley) the entire book is filled with the kind of photos that modelers crave, from numerous shots of the right-of-way to armloads of detailed views of the locomotives (ever see the underside of a Shay?) and oddball homemade rolling stock. If you intend to model the West Side, Last of the 3 foot Loggers is the one book you shouldn’t be without.
