Westbound NS freight with helpers tackles the East Slope at Altoona, Pa

A Westbound NS 11K, with a standard cab SD70 on the point, makes a run at the East Slope grade as it passes the Brickyard at MP238 on the NS Pittsburgh Line 5 miles East of Horseshoe Curve.

A pair of SD40-2 helpers shove hard on the rear of this train

Enjoyed that one too Dave…Always like to see my Pennsylvania homeland.

Very nice. I admit, it has gotten pretty boring out here in the desert. (best action is south of here about 40 miles to the Sunset Route) I havent seen a SD40 on the rails in awhile. Biggest grade we have is 1.1. Nice to see the motor’s thumpin’. Nice video and so much better than a stack train.

Thanks, Modelcar…it was shot relatively early in the morning with low clouds blocking sunlight until a glimpse of sun appeared as the rear helpers retreated into the distance…

Right away I noticed the audio - first the loco’s horn/ whistle, then the birds singing, the crossing signal’s bell, the grade crossing warning from the loco, then its bell, then a scanner, the cars going past - including the occasional flat wheels and a rattle from something loose in the track - then the helpers until they curve out of sight. Do you use a directional or other special pick-ip microphone ?

Also notice that the classic PRR position light signals in the going-away view are “approach-lighted” - they went out just as soon as the helpers went past them.

I didn’t count the cars, but it was a loonng train - I’d estimate at about 150 cars ? From timing some cars it seemd to be moving at 15 MPH, which for the 6 mins. or so (1/10 hour) going by would be about 1.5 miles long.

Thanks for sharing - very nice !

Great clip, added to my favorites. [8D]

I recall listening on the scanner when the helpers were coupling onto this train and getting the train’s layout from the head end…it was somewhere around 9300 feet in length. As far as the microphone, it is the built in microphone on the camera…nothing special…I do use an external speaker for the scanner which amplifies it a bit…I usually hang the speaker on the tripod directly beneath the camera when preparing to film.

I beat this same train to Gallitzin, and took a still shot of the helpers as they rolled West toward ‘UN’ just West of the Gallitzin tunnels
