By the late 1970’s which paint scheme was commonly used on the Western Pacific’s locomotive fleet: the silver with the orange stripe, or the green with orange lettering?
Alfred Perlman assumed control of the WP in 1970. “Perlman Green” locomotives began to appear shortly after that, and well into the administration of R. G. Flannery. Commonly used is a difficult question; the green was the standard color, while many locomotives continued to carry the solid orange, and orange and silver well into the early 70’s.
BTW, I believe Perlman was also responsible for that awful sanitarium-green color applied to block signals.
ok thanks, I’ll focus on the green units on my late 70’s- mid 80’s layout then.
In the late 1970s, WP locomotives began to be painted in green with an orange nose. If I remember correctly, this is the paint scheme WP’s GP40-2s were delivered in.
Green and orange lettering, YUK! Long live the silver and orange.

As mentioned the Perlman-Flannery team changed the colour scheme on the late WP. 1971 was the year Perlman Green made its debut.
I too wondered when the change came as I have a “California Zephyr” by Precision Craft (BLI) and some Perlman Green WP power. Can’t run 'em together as the CZ was gone for over a year before the paint change.
