Western where is it 2/15/06

Well, I think it’s one of those “quick unload” ramps at a BEST department store somewhere. Odd, that they would be unloading boxcars and covered hoppers, though. I would think containers would be more the order of the day.

Oh boy tough one! I’m pretty sure I know this one…its the old SP now UP ROW. I can see Forest Lawn Glendale (or is it the Brand Library) on the hill top right above the guy in the red shirt so I know its not under the 134 freeway underpass in Glendale. Mountains in background so its looking north. That overpass could be the 2 fwy but it could also be Burbank or Olive . The Best store is long gone today…ahrgghgh I’m gonna say it could be the north end of Taylor Yard. But it could also be Burbank or Olive street overpasses. Dam .

I dont remember this accident, but shee-oot- Best went the way of the DoDo so long ago I’m not surprised i dont remember it.

[(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D] It’s was a “quick unload” alright. [(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D]

Good guess Vic but no it’s not around Taylor.

Northridge, California

Yes, It’s the derailment that was caused by the Northridge earthquake in 93’.
The view is looking west from Lindly ave. down the SP Coast line (or was it Metrolink by then?)

It was Southern Pacific at that time. This was the 1RVLAM3K16 train if I remember right. I knew the engineer and conductor on this train. They could see the earthquake coming at them. It made the track look like an ocean wave coming at them and all the lights were going out as it got closer to them. Since this was a “K” train it had a 30 mph speed limit between Chatsworth Street and Burbank Junction. The quake lifted the lead unit 3 feet off the track and it slide forward 700 fett stopping just short of Nordhoff Street (the cross over in the picture) on the BEST side of the bridge. If it wasn’t for the K in the symbol this train would have been travelling at 60 mph. The sulfer it was carrying is what gave this train a K or hazardous material train.

Metrolink had been in the picture at this time. In fact the Chatsworth train station, in 1992, had been relocated from DeSoto Avenue in Chatsworth (SP Northridge block) to around the curve to between Lassen Street and Devonshire Street.

Thanks for the info. i clearly remember the events of that night. From where I was at in Van Nuys the ground dropped about 3-4 feet and started ossilateing up and down violently. After about 30 seconds it had calmed down a bit and I bolted for the door. I checked on my neighboor and jumped in my truck and hauled a$$ to work as I knew there would be problems. I was the head end tech for Century cable at the time and my head end in Santa Monica feed all of the LA systems. When I got on the 405 I noticed there were no cars behind me. I didn’t realize it till later those cars in front of me were the last ones through the 14 interchange before it collapsed (killing a CHP officer, now the interchange is named after him.

Once I changed out some blown fuses all I had to do is fill the generator every 2 hours till the power came back on. That ended up takeing 38 hours. And I was on the clock the whole time, eventually makeing triple time. i made more money on that one shift then I did on a normal pay check.

Have I done this one yet? I don’t remember. Anyway here is another for today.

ARGH!!! I was kinda close…so is that the Brand library or Forest Lawn in the background?

PS I was in bed asleep when Northridge occured, place shook like hell but nothing fell, other than my small micro-layout which hit the kitchen floor from a high shelf and exploded. Only reason I got out of bed was to check on my hysterical neighbor. Otherwise just watched TV coverage, boss said take the day off, so got to see all the coverage.

The Whittier EQ was the one that scared me. I sat up in bed when the EQ started, the bed started rolling and I thought “this is going to be fun…” next thing I knew I was thrown off the bed onto the floor!

miss-posted pic…let try this[;)]

that is Cajon, I dont know what that sections is called.

Sorry, it’s not the Brand Library or Forrest Lawn. To the right in front of the bridge it a BEST, which is a retail store. The bridge it where Nordhoff Street crosses over the Coast mainline in Northridge. To the left of the right of way are other San Fernando Valley business’. The mountains in the background are the Santa Susana mountains; the division point between the San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley.

Further to the west, the tracks curve due north then due west going under tunnel 28 (Topanga Canyon Blvd) followed by tunnels 27 and 26 coming out where Hasson siding now is.

PS I’ve lived around this area since July, 1967. Lived thru every eathquake. This was the only earthquake (January 17, 1993) is the only one that scared me. All the others are no big deal, without question. Not even the aftershocks bothered me. No power of any kind at my hours for 18 hours.

It seems like the Northridge earthquake was January 17, 1994.

Was the train hauling sulfur or sulfuric acid? It does not seem like sulfur would make a train a K train, since sulfur is a Class 9. Also, it seems like the aerial photograph in PRN showed several tankcars that looked like sulfuric acid cars. However, I do not see sulfur or sulfuric acid, listed specifically or by type of chemical, listed in my timetable as chemicals that would cause a train to be a K train. Perhaps there was something else.

I just dug out my March 1994 Pacific Rail News. It was 1994. The train was a HORVQ. There were several sulfuric acid tankcars that derailed visible in a photograph that was probably tanken from the Nordhoff overpass (I was thinking it was an aerial photo). There is also a photograph of SP 8004 laying on its left side.

No, Chad, I have not seen you post this latest picture prior. It is, however, Cajon Pass. I have seen this picture before.

Well, If you have seen it before, I must have posted it before. Yes it is Cajon Pass from the Summit of Mt. San Antonio, AKA Baldy.

Thanks for fixing the post Vic. I see I forgot the / and didn’t check the post. My bad.

Yeah, you posted that one a few weeks ago… Cajon from the top of Mt. Baldy.

EDIT: Wow, there’s an echo in here- that’s what I get for not reading closely!

Oops. There goes that darn CRS again.[swg]
