Trying to get my parents to go shopping for my son ( their Grandson ). Are there deals at these shows? Lots of vendors? I don’t want them to go and be disappointed.
I’m looking forward to the WGH Show this year. The opportunity to interact with the major manufacturers is great. Plus, it gives our club exposure to several thousand members of the public. Unlike many clubs that just have modules, ours also has a fixed layout in the basement of Union Station so we look at this as an opportunity to publicize it and potentially gain a couple of members.
Chris from Walthers will be at their booth. He is a former railroad employee so if things get slow go over and ask him to tell some stories. He did indicate to me that Walthers generally brings a more beginner oriented selection of stuff to WGH shows. He said he’s looking forward to being in Colorado.
Wow you’re in Arvada. I’m right up the street from you in Broomfield. You have a layout in Union Station? Awesome, I’m modeling Union Station on my new layout!!
I’ll look out for you guys, what booth will you be at Chris?
I’m hoping to get a deal on a Digitrax Super Cheif system, the whole nine yards.
Good to know. If you talk to him before he leaves, let him know I’ll be stopping by their booth on Friday. Our club is doing a special exhibitors open house that evening. We’re always open Friday nights but this one is special with the show in town.
We’ll be at the Platte Valley & Western Modular layout. It’s in the second hall on the south side between the Denver Garden Railway Group & the Youth in Model Railroading group. Stop by & say hi or catch us “in the basement” any Friday between 7pm & 9pm. Check the website @ www.PVWRR.org for details on our scheduled events & activities.
I’ll be there Sunday with my children and their modules in the Youth In Model Railroading Layout. Saturday I’ll probabaly be helping out at the Greeley museum.
If you haven’t seen the layouts in Denver Union Station you need to make a special trip to do so. In addition to the Platte Valley that started in 1984, the O-scale club has been down there since the 1930s. There is also a club layout in the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, and the Greeley Freight Station Musuem layout just north up highway 85 from you in Greeley (obviously).
Well, I spent about two hours cruising the booths and only found one really good deal. The local “Hobby Town” hobby shop had a table of 75% off merchandise. I picked up some Branchline box cars, a PCM locomotive, and a Digitrax PM42.
While it was nice having some different vendors, most of the merchandise was pretty much expected. The manufacturer’s booths were interesting but I saw nothing super outstanding. BLI didn’t have anything new to show, just their existing current production locos. Athearn was the only vendor I saw showing prototypes of future release models. I didn’t even see a Bachmann booth.
Oh, I have to correct my earlier post. I did find the Bachmann booth. Apparently yesterday I missed one whole isle. The S-Scale people were on that row too. My heavens S-scale is good looking stuff.
Which ones had you not seen. I believe all but the Z-scale one have been to most of the Denver Great Train Expo shows.
Yeah me too, but the retailers that were there were a bit more up-scale than the “sell out of my garage” type that usually show up. I did find those Railroad in Color books that normally sell between $40-$50 for $25 each. I purchased 5 and the fellow gave them too me for $100. I got “Southern Pacific Shasta”, “Southern Pacific San Joaquin Valley’”, “Route of the Eagles”, “Kansas City Southern”, and “Erie”. They had a MKT, and a “MP Diesel power” I really wanted but it looked like they had gotten wet. All the inside pages were all crinkled up. I also picked up a bunch of Proto-2000 stock and tank cars for $6 each. I got a D&RGW map of Pueblo that I have meant to get for years and joined the Rio Grand Historical Society too.
The MTH booth is the only one I did not visit… I simply refuse to buy anything from that company.
I could not vouch for the crowd. It was rather busy this morning when I arrived. On our exhibit the fog machine ran out of fluid about 1/2 way through the day.
I attended both days. Thought it was a great show. The GTE is okay but WGH is so much better. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to talk to factory reps like Digitrax, Atlas, Athearn, etc. I found more N scale choices than normally found at GTE, and very competively priced.
