what about a for sale/wanted addition to this forum

hello…i also fly rc planes…on the rcuniverse (the rc plane version of trains.com) there is a section for sale/wanted transactions…there is a rating system that the seller and buyer use to weed out the less then honest…i have bought and sold for many years with out problems…this way you don’t have to hassel with the pay-pal system…postal money orders are used …so there is no middle man…no system is fool proof , but it works pretty well
check out rcuniverse.com and decide…
if there is such aa system on trains.com ,i have missed it…thanks…tishman

No thanks; that’s what Ebay is for.

If we allow ANY for sale messages, the forums will soon be swamped with nothing but them, and it’ll kill the forum.

I use Ebay occasionally when I find an item of interest and NO…I don’t use Paypal.Like you said,I use money orders sent directly to sellers…so far no complaints.

Not using Paypal has me pass by a nice item once in a while when a seller will not accept MO’s or won’t ship outside U.S. Sellers have every right to shorten their potential buyers spread but then I figure it is their loss, not mine.

And as Orsonroy wisely stated, turning this forum into an auction site, which Ebay does nicely, would go against the whole idea behind it and would eventually destroy the interest.

Actually there already is a classified section- if you go to the main Trains.com webpage, along the left side there is a heading for classifieds.

Tishman, I think it’s a good idea. Still not allowing it on main pages, but providing a separate area for those who want it. Those who don’t, just don’t go there.

Since the only revenue our good sponsors receive here is from advertising sales, I would think it’s an opportunity for them, too. Certainly an advertiser would be interested in talking to someone who is browsing for sale items… that is, someone looking to buy something.

I have to agree with orsonroy on this one. It would just create a big mess. We all know where ebay is if we need to buy or sale something…

I agree with orsonroy, too. I’ve done a lot of business as a buyer on ebay, and only had one problem through several years. And for all the complaining about Paypal, they are the ones who straightened that one out. I don’t need this site to offer that service.

I think those who run this site have made it fairly clear that they are not interested in going that direction. Further, from a buyer’s perspective, my choice is to check ebay, where there are a few thousand items for sale in my scale, check the online sellers I regularly do business with, or check on a page on this forum. I’ve got a feeling I would check them in that order since my odds of success are higher elsewhere.

For what it’s worth, Stan at Internet Hobbies told me that they prefer PayPal because it is the best protection for BOTH parties. If I buy something on E-Bay, I use PayPal, if I buy direct I use my credit card because PayPal debits my bank account.

The value of e-bay versus this forum is that there are a few thousand more potential buyers and an auction to get the best price. What could be wrong with that?

eBay now has a “wanted” feature where you can post what you are interested in and supposedly will be put in contact with someone who has it for sale. Don’t know how long they keep your request, but it might be easier than checking all the time. Whatever you want will be on eBay at one time or another!

No, to many possibl scams.

There are two other free forums that already have Want and For Sale sections.
The Gauge and The TrainBoard. I have used them both with good results.

The intent of the idea is good, but IMHO this would transform the forum into a flea market which is what we already have ebay for.

I can imagine a scenario like the following:

New Thread: Hey guys, check out the Atlas I just put up for sale!
OR… Do you think I’m asking too much for that brass engine?

Keep the forum like it is!
