What Adhesive to Use?

All, I am still new to this hobby and I am getting a little confused on what kind of adhesive to use. This is for attaching the rail to the track bed. Currently we are using “Liquid Nail” which I know is a little extreme after reading some posts. Can anyone suggest something else, perferably something I can get from Home Depot?

Thanks in advance.

Cheap latex caulk. Spread it very thinly on the roadbed (I’m assuming cork), lay the track and weight it down for a few hours.

Perfect! Thanks!

At our club, we use a construction glue called WeldBond, available at our local hardware stores. Looks like white glue, goes on like white glue, provides great tack within about 5-10 mins, and dries solid in 12 hours. I’ve personally used it to attach track and roadbed directly to foam and wood, with no issues. Put a small bead along the path of the track, spread it thin with your finger or similar, and put the track down. We hold track in place with thumbtacks until it dries.

I like white latex caulk. Dries clear; stays a little pliable; and track can be easily removed with a putty knife later if necessary.

Would y’all still use the same adhesive(s) if you were using WS foam roadbed?

Yes - I use WS Foam Roadbed and use DAP Clear Latex Caulk - it works great.

Be sure to use the CLEAR - both the Clear and White go on white, but the Clear dries to clear.

Spread thinly - not too thickly.

Another vote for cheap latex caulk. I use the white, spread it thin, it is nearly clear under the track. You can also use it for many other things. Foam to foam, foam to wood, cork to foam, track to cork. I also use it to attach castings to the layout base. One thing there, it does not take washes like plaster of sculptamold does, so keep it underneath the casting. Do not get the kind with silicon in it, I hear that does not take painting well. After use I take a long sheet rock screw and push it into the spout of the tube of caulk, put some Saran Wrap over the end, hold it in place with a rubber band. I have had it keep for over a year without drying out in the spout.

Good luck,

Richard

DAP clear, paintable latex calk.

If you spread it and give it a few minutes to get tacky you don’t have to weight or pin the track, it will stick pretty tight.

I use it to hold Woodland Scenics roadbed to the bench and track to the roadbed.
