If I remember correctly it means laugh out loud!
It’s like, ya know…text speak! Fer sure!(OMG!) oh my God…
DonZ-My eyes glazed over and I hadn’t even made it through the A’s!!
Thanks guys! I have it bookmarked now.

I just read a news article yesterday where the North Carolina DMV was recalling a bunch of license plates because they had “WTF” on them. Seems nobody noticed until some kids pointed it out to their 60-yr-old grandparent who complained about it. Apparently everyone else in the state above the age of 30 was clueless about it.

ROTFLHOLCBF!
More likely they weren’t so easily offended by the Marine Corps’ favorite verb/adjective/noun.
Granny wasn’t just clueless, she was TDSFW!
Edit - Apparently Too Darn Stupid For Words isn’t on the list either.

OMG. (Oh my God) I must really be OTH (over the hill) 'cause I remember when everyone used to write out in complete sentences what they meant. And, that meant full and correct punctuation. That was in the GOD (good old days) when the teachers ran the schools and not the students. Also, if you got a detention, or Heaven forbid, the “SLUGS” for mis-behaving, if the folks found out about it it was double jeapardy and you got it again at home. [%-)][sigh]
Blue Flamer.
I hate all the abbreviations where the meaning isn’t obvious. My normal response is to ignore them. Therefore, writer beware if you believe you are communicating effectively with abbreviations.
Mark
Yea, well I figured out some of them. I guess they are OK for text messaging on phones, but I ain’t going to learn a new language just to talk to some teeny-bopper. Guess I’m just an OF.
Hah!! There are at least four different meanings for “LOL”!
Mark
Yup. Almost as many as there are for the (non-text-message) word Rail.
I’m pretty sure that anyone using the word here doesn’t intend me to envision a bird, or the reply to a rant…
Language. Isn’t it fun?

Blue Flamer,
If you think acronyms and abbreviations only started with the invention of the internet and cell phones, you should do a little further thinking on just what was happening in the “good old days”. Heck, just look at the railroad business. NH = New Haven, UP = Union Pacific, TH&B = Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo, etc. RS-1 = 1st Road Switcher, SW-1 = Six Hundred Horsepower, Welded frame, etc. And we haven’t even touched on WWII military shorthand, the language of the “Beat Generation”, or even sports (RBI = Runs Batted In).
You know, back in the “real” old days, contractions were not much printed either. I think it was Mark Twain that first popularized actually writing what people said, rather than what the 100% proper English would have been.
This sort of reminds me of that Billy Joel song:
“The good old days weren’t always good,
Tomorrow’s not as bad as it seems.”
Paul A. Cutler III
Weather Or No Go New Haven
…or MTY - for eMpTY freight car
BO - for Bad Order
RIP - Repair In Place
All rather standard ‘shorthand’ used by railroads over the years…

I’m sure my old high school English teacher has passed away by now. That’s probably a good thing since her head would have exploded from the way kids talk and text message these days.[:-^]
