These extra coupler boxes came with my new Atlas U30C. The chassis is also drilled and tapped for these two screws, but what do you use with them … as you can see, a Kadee is considerably bigger than what these accept !!!

Maybe they are for the old X2F horn hook couplers.
Rick
… Nope, the old horn-hooks won’t fit these little boxes either !?!

Is it POSSIBLE that some “N” scale parts got put in the box? That is my guess.
Kitbashing and scratch building some other project.[:D] Stare at them long enough and you’ll find a use for them.
Whatever they are for, they BELONG to this engine as the frame has the proper holes tapped into it for these boxes / screws !?!

Is the chassis also drilled and tapped for a box that does take Kadee’s? What came on it when you bought it?
Did the engine come with drawbars?
To me, it looks like those gray boxes are set up for springs at the back of the coupler, one mounted against each sidewall. I do have some old horn-hook cars with a small coupler shaft like that, too. (Yeah, the Dremel takes the whole box off, neat and clean, and then those cars get Kadee couplers and draft gear boxes.)
Whatever it is, don’t throw it out. There is a rule in model railroading that anything you throw away you will find a use for within a week. It can sit on a shelf or in your junk drawer for 10 years but as soon as you decide to get rid of it, you will need it. Every expierienced model railroader knows this rule which is why most of us are pack rats.
I went right to the source … Wayne at Atlas informed me they are made for the Accu-mate PROTO coupler.
