The “thing” on the flat car is a dynamic load tester, to test the alternator max output /dynamic brake grids under load.
In the first photo, the thing in back is a mobil lab/research car, used to test prototype locomotive performance limits.
The thing in front looks like the nose/cab shell of a E or F unit…looks more like the back wall electrical cabinet.
THANKS
1st pix looks like a experimental ge unit or a test car for new locomotives,or a royal mistake by gee
2nd looks like part of ribbon rail power unit or something for overhead elct lines.
not enough of photos for 100 percent identifcation. dont know. great stumping photos!!!
ps ilike going to engine remaufactures shopps too as usually i see locomotives i sure dont know what planet they came from. mt. vernon il. shops have a few odd balls never seen before. silvis,il.too[:)]
In the front would be the Railroads answer to a TOP FUEL dragster in the making. [:I]
SLOCONDR
I’ve gone by these for a few years now and wondered the same thing. The equipment to the rear (our left) of the old BN unit I would go with the load tester answer…it’s something like that. The hulk to the front (our right) of the old BN is definately an old cab of some kind and it reminds me of locomotives used in desert countries since the forward glass is angled downward, which would trap water and snow in areas where inclement weather is a possibility. Desert operations might require the shading effect of the downward facing glass which may also help with reflecting some sunlight away from the crews’ eyes. Just a guess.
Perhaps that is the UFO the CSX train hit.
The old cab in front of the B32-8 is actually the kitchen at Hungry Howies. [tup]
