Interesting topic with a wide variety of answers. I’ll second (or third) the July 2003 Chicago issue. There’s also the July '93 Chicago issue but lets stick with the more recent version. (Will there be a July 2013 Chicago issue?? I hope so.) I also would suggest Nov '95. It just stands out in my mind. In 1993 (?) there was an article that covered the almost new CSX dispatching center in Jacksonville, FL when centralized dispatching systems were just starting. Not sure of the exact month though.
Probably November 1974 - John Crosby’s piece on life as a extra-board engineer on Penn Central’s Fort Wayne Division, and Walt Chander’s harrowing tale of an unfortunate NYC bridgetender in “As the Centuries DIDN’T Pass In The Night”.
Don’t remember the exact issue, but the issue with Crosby’s “historically based” narrative of firing a K4 on the eastbound “Broadway Limited” trip in the late 1940’s (Second Engine 28"??) a few years later would be right up there as well. You almost had to comb the cinders out of your hair after reading it.
This was also an excellent article on its subject:
“Of Rule 93, Form S-C, and the bow and arrow country - train-order dispatching on the Rock Island”
by Brunner, Edward J., Olson, R. B.
from Trains, July 1980, p. 44
( Magazine Index’s keywords: dispatcher order RI train )
I contacted Kalmbach about the April 1948 issue, and I could purchase a copy of the Al Kalmbach article which begins on page 19 of that issue. Would someone in possession of that issue or the DVD be kind enough to take a look at that issue and that article and tell me if there are additional maps and/ or drawings or diagrams that I should request as part of that article?
Dave Nelson specifically mentions an "incredibly detailed railroad map of the city of Milwaukee, part of Al Kalmbach’s article ‘Milwaukee, City of Streamliners’. "
Thanks. I would very much appreciate any assistance.
At night I had time to plan, think ahead and thus was at ease.
Daylight, I just had enough time to react to the next catastrophe. Nighttime was mostly running trains, while daytime was running trains, MOW, C&S, locals, and 56,000 other things.
In addition to the full page map of Milwaukee there is also a smaller map of downtown showing the area around the Rapid Transit, North Shore Line and Milwaukee Road stations.
Also, Paul Gibson at www.railpub.com has the April 1948 issue for sale.
