What are you guys building for christmas?? Anything special, or just a loop of track? Scale?? I am doing a HO Oval ( really long one ) with a N scale loop inside that, just smaller than the HO loop. This N scale loop has a siding, so I can switch trains when I want to run somthing else. Inside that I have a small N scale oval that circles the tree. On the inner oval, I run the Bachmann Acela ( n scale ) with the e-z command. I just used the tracks it came with. The next N scale oval I have a Kato amtrak train with a P42, and 8 superliners, and a southern pacific freight with a digitrax zephyr and kato unitrack. HO Loop has a spectrum 4-6-0 with 5 old time con-cor cars ( durango and silverton ) run on good old DC. So, what do you guys have?
Good old Lionel in a loop on the floor…
Lionel O scale Polar Express around the tree.
Lionel G Gauge around the tree and around the room. I will have about 60 foot of track with all my Lionel cars running. One engine and about 9 cars sounds good. I will post pictures later after I get it all set up. Baker
We have one of those “cheapie” plastic battery (1 D cell in the boiler) and a loop of plastic track for under the tree. I will say it does serve the pupose though. Ken
Right now my layout looks like a christmas or winter scene. I’ve got drywall compound down but haven’t had a chance to seal and paint it yet, so it looks this blinding white color.
yeah I like having a train run around on floor of tree in middle. but one problem is the cat walks all over it!!! it gets knocked off. yeah be nice to put shocking wires around it! ha ha .
I’m not doing one. 2 year old + trains of any kind = bad. Might when she’s older. Always liked to have a loop of HO around the tree.

Märklin Z scale train on a Noch Advent layout. It’s only14 inches square and it sits on a tabletop out of reach of small kids and critters. If I ever do a loop around the tree again, it’s going to be something big enough, heavy enough (diecast G gauge? live steam?) and moving fast enough to persuade our cat that fooling with it is a real bad idea.
For years, I have had an idea for a Christmas layout on a 4x8. It would be a winter scener with a double sided backdrop down the middle. On one side would be small New England style village and the other would be a rural scene with the track passing a frozen pond. I’d even thought of including the bottom of a ski slope but I’d have to see how much room I’d need to do it right. The railroad has been in my head for over 10 years but until I make more progress on my big layout, it is probably going to stay there.
I always run an HO train around my tree. I used to use a loop of track mounted on plywood that served as a base forthe tree and ran some of my old Missouri Pacific freight or an Antrak. Now, however, my 7 year old son insists that I run his Thomas, Annie, and Claribelle–so he wins. It is Christmas after all.

G-scale circle of track with a loco on it under the tree.
I have my 1985 special edition LGB setup in a circle around the tree this year, its almost 20 years old and still runs like new. I am going to get it serviced though.
Our club did a large(600 feet of track) G-scale layout at our local zoo–the vets did an outstanding job and it’s gotten great support from the public–also a nice write-up in our newspaper last Sunday.

Hopefully, I’ll get around to setting up the G scale train set under the tree this year. It’s spent the past 2 years in a box!
We have a 16-month-old boy in the house (let’s just call him Destruct-O-Boy). Not only will there be no train around the tree, there won’t be any ornaments less than 3 feet above the floor. If we did hang ornaments less than 3 feet above the floor, he would soon see to it that there would be no ornaments hung less than 3 feet above the floor. I might have to bolt the tree to the floor…
