What chimes?

Does anyone know of a website or CD that has soundfiles or sound
bytes of the more common chime sets used on diesels, with
identification?

Or can anyone tell me which chime sets (number and mfg) are used on:

SD40-2’s obtained by FEC from UP

GP40-2’s on FEC

AMD-103/P40 and P42’s used by Amtrak

I’m trying to match them up with Loksound files that are available.

Hal

I found some sound here once, http://www.railpictures.net/
Here’s a CP gp38 with sound at a crossing http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/othen/rrpics.htm
hope it helps, DD

In case you haven’t, check out these two websites:

www.dieselairhorns.com

(Click on “Sound LIbrary”. Some very nice samples. One of the cleanest samples is an RS5T sound byte. IMHO, Good enough to be used for a sound decoder. I plan on using it for my HO Seaboard Coast Line locomotives once I get the Digitrax sound decoders )

http://atsf.railfan.net/airhorns

( Matt Donelly sells a CD with sound samples. He’s knowledgable and takes e-mail questions.)

Enjoy the music!

Oh boy. I am going through the same thing. Did not realize there were so many customized sounds available now. I am trying to match up an SD70-MAC from Alaska. I have found everything you would want to know about this engine and then some. Looked at several horn sound sites. But have been unable to find out just which horn matches a particular engine.

Thanks all.

The best info I have right now:

FEC GP40’s, except for a few: Leslie 3-chime,
with a 2-forward, 1-backward set at each end.
I note that Athearn and Atlas don’t have the
second set.

Source: FEC Engineer. He said a few have Nathan
5-chimes on the cab roof which are so loud they
give him a headache.

FEC, former UP, SD40-2’s: probably Nathan 3-chime
or another make; higher pitched different sound
than the Leslies anyway. Same source plus others.

Amtrak P40/42: Nathan 5-chime; also said to be
very loud.

Hal
