what company is best to find rock island n scale

My lay out is based on the rock island line in Iowa circa 1950-1960

I doubt you will find one producer producing a full line of Rock Island products. The best I can sugget is to go to a manufacturer or dealer site and search for “Rock Island”. Watch for new releases and go to train shows to pick up out of production items. That is the way I have built my inventory of my local roads.

Good luck,

Richard

Atlas & Walthers/Life-Like have done N scale diesel locomotives in N. Both also have done freight cars over the years.

It’s been some time since I modeled in N-scale, but when I did I also collected Iowa roads (RI, Milw, IC, and CRANDIC). I got most of my rolling stock from Kadee (now Microlines). They had both 40’ and 50’ boxcars for the RI, in the old herald, as well as a flatcar and gondola. This was in the 70’s and 80’s so today you would probably have to go to ebay or a local swap meet to find these items.

I just did a quick eBay search, they have 113 items for “Rock Island” under Model RR and Trains (N scale).

Why we need to develop painting and decaling skills to fill in the voids. Even modeling the PRR who wants several box cars with the same number?

These guys have nothing in stock right now, however there appears to be new stuff coming along down the road. It might be worth keeping an eye on them.

For some cars from some roads, Accurail has helped aleviatge the problem of multiple cars with the same number. For some of their cars you can ask for a free set of decals to renumber the cars. The background color on the decal matches the color of the car. Don’t knnow what they have in Rock Island. I have gotten the decals for one of my box cars, but haven’t gotten to putting them on yet.

Good luck,

Richard
