My 2 main running engines is an IHC 4-6-2 Pacific Premier CNW and a Walthers GE Dash 8-40BW Santa FE (HO) Two Main Lines.I need 2 Affordable , but good controls[?]
MRC Railpower 1300 and 1370. They can be found for under $30. Its a step up from a trainset power pack. Much better, and affordable too.
If you want even better, go with the cheapest Tech 4-- the 200. They go for about $40.
I’ve been happy with my Bachmann Spectrum power pack. I believe it is comparable to the MRC 1300 and again is a step up from a trainset power pack.
I picked up an MRC Tech 2 dual controller off e-bay for about $30.00. Seemed like a good way to get two quality cabs for a low price.
MRC TECH II or Tech 4 series power packs. Unbeatable performance and quality. If you go DCC, you can still hook one up in addition to your DCC Controller.
Bikeman, I’m not familiar enough with all the brands and models of power packs, put I will still recommend the MRC brand. However, I would recommend you think ahead to your needs in the future such as doulble or triple heading trains, and of coarse any lights, signals and other electrical needs the power pack will supply and purchase one that has the output to handle those needs. A less expensive power pack may handle a sinlge loco, but a year from now you may want to double head a train but may find that the extra loco will trip the breaker after a few minutes of running. Result-- disappointment. Best to ya, Ken
