What controls the forum's ''log in'' ?

Being retired, I look in on the forum 3, 4 times a day, sometimes more. I don’t log in unless I feel the need to reply or ask. I’ve never logged out.

At times , when I come back I’m still logged in. Other times not, never more then a couple hours.

I was on yesterday, this morning I’m still on, overnite, never kept me on that long. Wondering ,why?

Management is monkeying around with a system upgrade. That said I logged in in December, and am still logged in. I might have had to log in a couple times since, but only once on the new laptop I got 3 weeks ago.

Traditionally it’s cookies that remember login on the local machine if set when checking a box on the website to remember log in.

I’ve noticed since MR started playing around with the new password requirement, I find almost every day since then, whether on my Home PC, other PC or smart phone, I’m having to log myself back in most of the time. It’s inconvenient and I do wish they would fix it so the site will remember and auto log me in like many other sites.

Yeah, it’s cookies, so how you manage (or don’t manage) them is what determines whether or not you stay logged in.

I block most cookies, and regularly clean up many/most of the ones I do let through for various web sites. If I remove the MR/Trains/Kalmbach cookies, I 'll have to log back in the next time I visit the forums, and allow those cookies to be set if I want to stay logged in.

But I usually just leave the MR/Trains/Kalmbach cookies alone, and also some other mostly benign ones for sites I want to stay logged into, when I do my routine cleanup. Saves me the trouble of having to allow/log in/disallow every time I visit a known-to-be-trustworthy site.

Also, some browsers have a private window option that doesn’t save cookies from that session (supposedly). So if you use that option a site won’t know you the next time (supposedly - I suspect that some sites use other ways to track you).

So what I don’t understand if I allow cookies and check the box to log me in every time, why ain’t it working for MR forums consistantly. Same day, yes, but the next day gotta log back in again. Other forums don’t make me do that the next day.

I have not had to log in for 6yrs…but no one knows I’m here…LOL.

Take Care! [:D]

Frank…AKA ‘‘The Shadow’’

Some guys get logged off as soon as they sign in. Take Frank (zstripe) for example. He is never on the forum. [sigh]

Why in the world do they call staying loged in Cookies?

Hard to say without knowing the detailed specifics of the environment you’re using to access the forums - OS, browser, AV, utilities like CCleaner, etc. And all the settings for them, as well as scripts and tasks that may be scheduled.

So lots of things that it could be, but the bottom line is that something is cleaning up or otherwise deleting the cookie(s) that keep you logged into this forum.

I say this with confidence, because I’m able to reproduce it at will by simply deleting, or not, the appropriate cookies on my machine.

Staying logged in isn’t called “Cookies”. Rather, cookies are small pieces of data stored in your Web browser and (usually) sent back to the Web site.

They were originally intended so the Web site could “remember” things about you, such as whether you’re logged in, what you might have in a shopping cart, etc.

More info here.

No idea, but I was finally able to log in for the first time in about 2 months

No problem logging in here. I have never stayed logged in to any forum. Only log in when I want to post. Not a big deal.

My browser is set to clear all data when I close the browser. Nothing remains. I close about eight times a day.

Never allow third party cookies. Too many privacy thieves on the Internet tracking people.

LONG-INs are controled by a sloth in southern Brazil. They get Thrusdays and Fridays off, the do not work on Saturday or Sunday, and the rest of the week they can generally be found in the break room.

And all this time I thought it was a drunken monkey. [(-D]

The add blocker Chrystal prevents logon on an iPad too. It should be temporary disabled until you are logged on. Don’t ask me how I learned it…

The interesting thing is it seems to be happening on several different environments. One is Windows 7 64 bit and current version of Google Chrome AVG antivirus, another is Windows 8 with IE version on the windows phone. In a third environment, Windows 7 64 bit and IE 11, McAfee Antivirus HIPS is used.

So you can see, a variety of environments but the common element is that MR forums require to be logged in subsequent days after it was logged in previouisly. It may be coincident to the changes MR made or not.

Cookies are Browers Unique. If you log in with FIREFOX, all well and good (LION has had no problems), but should LION log in with Chrome or from a different platform then must log in again. Tablet of LION was cheapest ine Walmart, is all full, can go to websites, but no place to put cookies. Dosen’t wrok very well anyway.

Internet Explorer is finished, obsolete, and no longer supporded by Microsoft. EWE can try the new Microsoft EDGE, but for whatever reason… it NEVER worked for the LION. Is a problem, MS knows about but seems to ignore. Maybee it will work, and maybee it will not work. The Cortana thingie doesnt work either.

Oh well, the FOX works and that is sufficient.

Someday I will know what cookies are.
