What Diesel's should I get?

I’m trying to model this lay out between 1910 and 1930. What type of Diesel’s would have been just produced at this time in the eastern states. Also, what would I have seen in the yards, making up trains?

Thank you!!!

Robert

Robert,

That would be a hard one. I think the only diesels produced then were manufactured by westinghouse and possibly Baldwin in the late 1920’s. Hopefully someone can give you more help than that. I will have to look at my locomotive history books for more info.

Robert,

I’m afraid that you’ll have to bump up your era in order to find more than one diesel. Between 1925-30, GE produced a 60-ton, 300 HP Oil/Electric model known as the “AGEIR (Alco - General Electric - Ingersoll-Rand consortium) Boxcab”:

According to this web site, it was “the first production run of Diesel-electric engines in North America”. And it wasn’t until 1931 that the Alco 300 was produced. There would be some “non-steam” electrics produced in that era though. Diesels didn’t really start coming onto the scene until the 30s.

Robert, if you can bump up your era to 1940, the Alco High Hoods (HH) were produced from 1932-40. If so, a wonderful model to be had would be the Atlas HH600/600. She’s a beauty, crawls like a snail, and comes with sound. Another would be the EMC SW1, which was first produced in the late 30s.

Hope that helps…

Tom
