What does CV 47 equal on DT400 controllers?

I have a bachmann 2-8-0 with OEM Tsunami sound and I want the whistle to quill. On the CD that comes with it, it says cv 47 controlls the playability of the whistle. The problem is, it needs to know what CV47 equals on your throttle. I looked in the DT400 manual, and couldn’t come up with an answer. I guessed, and tried CV 47= 255, but it didn’t work.

You need a pressure-sensitive whistle playing button (F2) which your DT400 may not have. Or, so is my understanding. It is therefore the function, and not the CV that you would be concerned with when it comes to the throttle and actually trying to quill the whistle.

All but the very first few DT400’s have the pressure switch (another example of AJ thinking ahead). To enable it, you have to program the OpSw on the throttle itself. Here is a link on how to set it: http://www.digitrax.com/kb/index.php?a=812

The reference to CV47 is programming of the decoder, The decoder must be also set up to allow the whistle to be playable. The throttle settings enable the pressure switch,. The decoder settings determine if it actually does anything or not.

Well, it has to match the “channel”. There are up to 256 playable things defined (called analog functions), and both throttle and decoder have to agree which one is the one to use. However, 255 is so far the only defined (for volume control AKA playable whistle), see also http://www.nmra.org/standards/DCC/WGpublic/9910241/9910241.html

Both the sound decoder and he DT400 must be ‘playable’ - Most DT400’s are, and the above posts show how to enable the feature on your DT400. For the decoder, check with the manufacturer. I have several BLI engines that needed the ‘upgrade’ chip so that this feature would work. Trying to use it with a Soundtraxx B280LC decoder resulted in the engine stopping in it’s tracks when trying to blow the whistle! My new P2K H10-44 works great right out of the box.

Yes, the whistle is playable. I’ll head down to the layout and try some different CV’s.
