So I was revisiting the Model Railroader website again after a long hiatus, and I realized that I can no longer access the product review videos because I’m a member but not a subscriber to the magazine. What gives? [:(!]
If you are not a subscriber, several functions are not available since the new forum was installed.
Product reviews are not free for MR to produce. So limiting them to folks they know are paying (via subscription) seems reasonable. If you buy the magazine at your LHS/bookstore you’ll get them anyway. This site is free and has a wealth of information that you won’t find elsewhere, so I don’t think anyone has cause to complain.
Enjoy

If you are a subsciber you get them anyway too so why are they even available then per this logic?
Are there “extra” or longer reviews on the web site that are not in the magazine?

Convenience. They warehouse the reviews in one place so they can be found a lot easier than digging through the magazines to figure out which issue it was in. They also put them on the web site earlier than they publish the magazine.
Newspapers put a lot of their content online. But many of them require you to have an account to dig up something out of the archives or access part of what is published in the printed version. This sort of thing is not all that uncommon.
I’m not sure why all the angst, though. I read the things, but it has been my observation that shortcomings are usually downplayed. You have to read between the lines if you want to uncover anything unflattering.
Hey guys, I am a subscriber (my dad bought me 1 for my bday) I got the January 07 issue but when I try to read the product reviews it tells me I must be a subscriber? Is it because my name is Tim K but on the magasine its listed as my full last name? Thanks
Tim:
Not sure–should have been able to clarify that point when you did your initial log-in. If not, I’d e-mail them.
I agree with everything above–I think MR is the one magazine in the hobby that’s a must, hence I subscribe to it–makes sense to me that Kalmbach is going to limit access to this infor that’s on-line to subscribers. By the way, you’ll also save a fair amount of $$$ by subscribing if you’re buying an issue every month!

You may have to go to Model Railroader home page, click on costomer service and register the subscription number on the mailing sticker
