What has 5 cabs but 4 locomotives?

This does:

PICTURE NOT MINE!!! Though I wish it was!

Does anyone have any info as to why the HHP-8 was on the BNSF?

Maybe going to the AAR test track out in Pueblo CO for something. That would be the only reason I could think of.

That’s what Joe said, but I thought why would it ct through Illinois.

It’d cut through IL because that’s Amtrak’s hub.

I wouldn’t mind saying that was mine either.

I’d agree with the guess that its headed to the test track at Pueblo. Perhaps it was out east for tests (Northeast Corridor?) and is now headed through Chicago to Denver on the Zephyr, then BNSF forwards it to Pueblo.

Ok, thanks. I can’t wait for it to come back through!!!

waits in anticipation

As the Australian members of our forum might point out, a lash-up with more cabs than locomotives is hardly unusual Down Under.

I see five locomotives in your photo.

Many of the Electrics in the N.P. fleet had double Cabs.

Several Locomotive manufactures built double cab units

Also Most Amtrak from the Midwest - East have a cab unit on both ends and one power unit.

That just came through Colorado Springs headed due south on the Joint Line, so Pueblo would be a strong possibility [;)] (we don’t see much Amtrak action here, so that really stuck out).

The HHP units have been rather disappointing performers and Amtrak and builder, GE are scratching their heads. BUT–does the Pueblo test track have 25kv catenary?

It went to the AAR track outside Pueblo. The FRA has a new test car for speeds up to 120mph. Well, to test the new car at those speeds, you need something that will get it going that fast!

Pictures from the trip down the Joint Line. Not mine either. http://www.drgw.net/gallery/DOTX220Move

Looks like I called it right considering the only thing that an electric locomotive would be used for would be is the AAR test track. I wish I could see it run once.

I didn’t know the couplers on the electric locomotives were compatible.

Remember here in the US Amtrack runs standard Tightlock type H I think style on all the equipment. You could run a Superliner behind the HHP-8 if you wanted. The only cars that do not have the tightlocks are the Acelas but those are purpose built for that train. The Talgos have tightlocks on each end so they can be pulled by standard locomotives.
