What if we did not have any cameras to photograph trains, and the only cameras avalible are those owned by Movie Production Companies and TV Studios? What if we could not photograph the UP Heritage Units or any odd ball stuff? What if We did even HAVE Railroads?
We would all simply do what I do now…that being to sit on our lawn chairs in good weather, or in our cars in bad weather, and just enjoy watching the trains for the sheer pleasure of it.
Well, assuming that it was REAL important to me, I’d probably get a job working for a movie company or TV station , and borrow their equip.
You also ask "what if we did even have RR’s? Is that a typo?
If you meant what if we didn’t even have rr’s then I guess all the people who aspire for “horn free” zones, and for CSX to paint their bridge, would finally be happy
If there were no consumer cameras, we would be at the mercy of those who had the resources to acquire them to film the railroads and sell their products. Even today, railroad video usually occupies at least one table at most railroad shows, allowing us to see railroads in motion that we might not see otherwise.
As for “what if there were no railroads,” that’s been discussed in other places - now you’re altering more than railfan memories…
What if no one had ever invented the wheel? Or what if we had diesel engines but no one had invented diesel fuel? Or what if someone invented the train but never invented railroad tracks? Or how would we move trains around mountains and other obstructions if no one had even invented the curve? How would trains get to different places if no one invented turnouts? Or what if someone had invented the jet passenger plane but never invented the airport? Would they stay in the air forever, waiting for someone to invent the runway?
And finally … what if the sky did fall?
Jeez, all this deep thinking has brought back my hangover. [(-D]
