What If 8........NS Names

What if Norfolk Southern had chosen one of these other 9 Names…Would we have had a much diffrent company today? Would we still have Conrail around?

Crescent Rail Corp, FirstTran Railways, Innotran, NorSouth, Shenandoah, SN&W, Surtran or Terratran?

Union Atlantic? [:D]

It will be call “Conrail” and it will be run more efficient to compete against CSX.

Would have been a different name with the same people running it. Don’t see where things would have been much different. If your name was a different name but you had the same parents and upbringing, would your life be different?

What if CSX had chosen a suggested name, First American Rail Transportation Services? Would their motto have been “like the Wind”?

You are no comparing apples to apples. That’s like saying Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. Look at the Managment Style…[#dots]

I agree with that quote.

No, not at all, the same people who were running the Southern and the Norfolk and Western would have been placed in charge of the new Norfolk Southern, whether it be Norfolk Southern or some other name, do you think different folks would have come out of nowhere and ascended to the top? Don’t understand your sports analogy at all, if New England were still the Boston Patriots, would they be different? If the Red Sox were now the New England Red Sox, would they be different?

Keep in mind tha Conrail stand for Consolidated Railroads. It took six flags to become an icon in the railroad industry plus established themselves away from the pack. Now, you sports analogy is way out of content. What scramble eggs you are talking about Red Sox and New England. If you are comparing teams not sports. [soapbox]

The question is, if Norfolk Southern had been given a different name, how would things be different today? What’s Conrail standing for Consolidated Rail got to do with it?

We were talking about managment styles.

Are you trying to suggest that if the name was differant the company would be differant? knowing the same people baught the railroad. and one last thing do you even know what norfolk southern is? ( the real company)

That’s the question, Wabash, and somehow, they think that could have made a difference and a difference with subsequent events and the acquisition and splitting of Conrail, too. At least, they want to speculate that it might possibly have made events go a different route.

I don’t understand, how does NS being named something else gonna affect what happens business-wise?

Only if it were Clint Eastwood LOL. But really the name of the rr wouldn’t matter it’s still the same.

if you recall conrail was owned by the goverment because the railroad was broke and when the goverments deep pocket taxpayers upgraded it and made it profitable then they sold it. i never saw conrail as a icon they are like amtrak just hanging in there.

Wabash:

What is your take on Amtrak? Should the goverment still subsidy the poor railroad?

your answer is not easy because if they keep throwing money at them then it helps me. But at the same time i dont like making others rich off my tax dollars. I wont never get a big piece of the pie anyways.

Now how about you answer the question i asked you. do you really know what norfolk southern is?

man…this has to be about the lamest and most pointless thread ever!

what a waste of electrons…

(yes I know…someone will come up with the brilliant and oh-so-original retort of “well if you dont like it dont read it”…dont worry, I wont!)
