What If : Modern Boston and Maine Paint Scheme

Okay, so I was slightly bored this afternoon[:-^], and was thinking about what a modern Boston and Maine paint scheme would look like today, on a (relatively) modern locomotive.[%-)]

I did the lettering quickly, I’m not really sure what would look good. (Its also hard to do lettering on a line drawing, where all the doors and access panels show up so much, whereas on the reail thing, they get painted over and don’t show as much.)

Opinions/suggestions welcome.

Also look for updates and new idea [8D]

Looks good, but would be better with a Minuteman logo up front!

I looked quickly for one, and couldn’t find a good high-res one.[:(]

I’ll look some more Monday when I have time to work on it a bit more. [:)]

Looks really good!Beats the you-know-what out of guilford gray![(-D] I second CD’s suggestion on the Minuteman logo.[tup] I wonder what number series they would have used on those monsters.Definately a Boston to Mechanicsville run for these babies!Maybe even the possibility of running to the power plant at Bow,NH.

Have a good one.

Interesting scheme; a few points:

In general, I wouldn’t strongly consider basing a prospective scheme around an SD70 or any other 3 axle truck unit. Why? Both the B&M and Guilford experimented with 6 axle power, and found that for general use the vastly increased damage that the locomotives do to the rail (3 axles isn’t going to be as friendly with curves as 2 axles, and the B&M is one line that has many, many sharp curves) outweighed the benefits of effeciency and power distribution that 6 axle power gives.

I would remove the shadow from the lettering as this would not be characteristic of any existing scheme and would be very difficult to apply. Just a small matter.

It certainly would look nice with a Minuteman logo on the front. However, the McGinnis shield outlived McGinnis’s tenure through to the end, so I wouldn’t see that disappearing.

All of the above said, we’re model railroading so all of those points could be worth squat. I’d be happy to have one of those running on my pike.

On a side note, if you dig through the online modeler’s archive at the BMRRHS website, you can see other people’s future fantasy BM creations actually applied. Some of them were mighty nice.

Some good points.

I’m thinking about possibly removing the full text of “Boston and Maine” and replacing it simply with BnM, or some form of the abbreveation (seems to be trendy these days) in possibly adding in an outline of New England in the background, somehow incorporating the Minnutman logo into the design. It’s also a good point to think about four axle power, as there isn’t as much room for text and graphics on a shorter loco.[|(]

I haven’t yet tried a four-axle version of the paint scheme (I don’t have THAT much free time yet…) but I have made some changes.

The Old

The New

I added the BnM text logo on the block on the side of the front hood of the locomotive. I also changed the logo on the side, to include a reincarnation of the Minnuteman. It’s kinda hard to see (A good high-res photo of the logo that I could trace/coppy has eluded me so far), but the new logo consists of the Minnuteman shilouette, in white, standing in front of a line drawing of the New England states (it is the Boston and Maine, after all) along with a newer version of the “Boston and Maine” along the side. I might try speed lettering on it for the third version. . .
