What Inspires you on these long winter days?

I need inspiring as my latest ventures are akin to government rails to trails programs where I’m ripp’n more than I’m lay’n. The Allegheny is causing me grief as the after engine is drifing off the rails, ballasting is boring, the upper level is still not built, I am less one tunnel as it was a pain, two turnouts are adrift and one is shorting.

THIS IS A REAL M.E.S.S.!!!

One step forward, two steps back.
Two steps forward, one step back
That’s better![:D]

Having friends over gets me to clean the house too.[8D]

Everthing but house work. The way my house looks is not important cuase my layouts in a shed in my backyard so for me it’s yard work

for got to say going godzillia is alto of fun

going to the LHS is a lot of fun for me. that means i get to buy more stuff.

i just got the benchwork and everything done so i can finally run some trains. i had a blast last weekend just watching all my trains go in loops.

All the above, except shoveling snow. Good grief I’m tired of shoveling snow.

For me, I consider “house work” to mean “working on structures”, which I have been doing a lot of these days–some kits, some scratchbuilt. I live where the weather is relatively decent in winter and so this is the time when I’m in the garage working on the layout–although I have received special dispensation from the wife to bring a certain amount of hobby kits in the house to work on in the living room, on the condition that I don’t get paint or glue on anything and I am able to maintain a minimum of intelligent conversation. I’ve done quite a bit of piece-cutting and test-fitting and fabricating in the house, I just take stuff outside to paint it…and have a nice big cutting board to cut things on to avoid savaging the nice table with my X-Acto and razor saw…

Livin’ in AZ thinkin’ 'bout all you shoveling snow. [:D]

Dave,
I have to agree. Living in Florida, I dont even know what a long winters day is [:D].
Of course, lately we have had a lot of long RAINY days, which means I dont get to
go to work. Perfect excuse to work on the layout [:-^]. Dave

I have to admit that shoveling snow sucks, but at least the weather doesn’t get boring.

I voted 1, but I chose 1 and 2. These forums are fun and I love MR articles. I’m waiting for that April issue, though.

Gee, thanks Snake. So glad to know those of us in the snowbelt are in your thoughts! [(-D][(-D][(-D] I’m really tired of this [censored]shoveling routine!

Fergmiester, I voted for ‘all’. Sometimes it is good to walk away from it all if for no other reason than to clear your head of all the possibilities that come with the hobby. Light bulbs have popped on in my head even while chucking the snow, and you can’t wait to get back in the house to sketch or write down a great idea (or actually implementing it).[:D]

That’s one ofthe nice things about summer, you don’t have to shovel rain.[swg]

Beside, I cheat anyway, I hired someone to plow mine, I haven’t picked up a shovel in years.

Speaking of shovels, here’s a funny story. This guy would tie a snow shovel to the roof of his car when he went on vacation, and just start driving. when somebody would ask him “what’s that?” he knew he could stop.[:D]

This is tough. I hate the long winters months. My trains are in the basement and its cold. My body get depressed, I need sunlight. I can not wait for spring.

This winter I tore up my layout and I just started re-building the bench work.

I’m lucky. I use a snowblower.[:D][:D][:D][swg]

I voted for “all the above”. The single thing that gives me a push from time to time is operating a layout with great friends. This is not a seasonal thing for me. Winter? Big deal. Just like spring, summer and fall, they are all great times to be involved in model railroading. I get a high when something I am working on or building actually turns out. I even wait with anticipation for each issue of MR. This has been a lifetime thing for me, and I do not see it ending until I am laying in a lined box, surrounded by flowers with an organ playing softly in the background. Yes, trains have sucked me in and are holding me captive. I recommend this captivity to everyone.

Tom

What inspires me on these long (actually, short) winter days? Why, the weather! For I am one of those nuts who models winter on his layout! When it snows a lot, I get inspired to winterize more ground or rolling stock on my layout. Interestingly enough, my inspiration dies out right around now when all my precious snow melts. Bah.

Oh Joy I’ll ship you some of the 3’ that got dumped on us last Friday. Does the main lain near you take gondolas or shall I ship it in a reefer?[;)]

Speaking of snow, we don’t get much here in the valley. The last time it snowed was during a freak winter storm when I was in high school. During 1st period, senior year. Some teachers saw the snow through the window and let students go outside. But our’s was a party pooper and we had to be content with watching it from inside.
