what is better?

what is the MSRP on that engine???

thanxs for the info Rob but cant really afford to spend a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on a loco that dos not fit in very good with what i model. I have seen a B&M by Model Power but its very expensive once i fini***he layout and get more desiels i will suck up and by a more expensive engine.

Prices have gone WAY down since I got mine. Trainworld lists them in N scale or HO for $74.99. I don’t know about any other scales. By the way, Trainworld stands by their products in my experience. I bought a loco from them earlier this year and when I got it the whistle was gone. They offered to replace it, no questions asked. I didn’t do it though. I just got a detail kit for a Kato 2-8-2 for $2.00 and used that whistle. I thought it was cool of them to offer though.

First off, [#welcome][#welcome][#welcome], bass123! Here on the Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western it is always 1925. Why? I just like Steam! Nothin like it. Steam is smelly, dirty, and noisy. There is just nothing in this world comparable to the blast of a steam whistle. Fwwooooooooooooooot is just so much more musical than Blaaaaaaat. No diseasals on my layout (thank you very much!).

But hey its YOUR layout, so model what YOU like! If you are unsure, the transition (or downfall) era gives you the opportunity to have some of both. What ever you decide, have fun with it and come back here often as there some great people here that will help you every time you need it.

I have narrowed my time fram to 1940 to 1970. One day I will have a mallet running next day a couple of SD40s. That is the beauty of this hobby you make your own rules. It is your own little world, after you start if you don’t like what you have tear it up and start over. You say you don’t know much about steam, there are hundreds of books out there on steam. It is the same for early diesel. Also as Mister Beasley said how much room do you have? That makes a big difference, nothing looks stranger than a 2-8-8-2 going around an 18inch radius turn, if it will . Also as several have said the last place to be economicaly conservative (cheap) is in you locomotives. If you buy a $20 locomotive guess what you get. Shop around you can get quality stuff at a good price. By the way you get a $20 locomotive. If you descide to spend $100 you can get 5 $20 ones that look nnice sitting on a sideing or you can get 1 realy good one that will actualy go down the tracks.

I like steam ,SHAYS,CHALLENGER CLASS 4-6-6-4, or any steamer with alot of wheels too. Steam engines, just so much history behind them and and the art of engineering to create them. From the fabricating of the steel,to bells that went on them. There all great.

Well said ! [tup]

It’s YOUR railroad. It’s YOUR choice.

pcarrel is it offered in New England roads

Like the others, I suggest you do some research first and see what piques your interest the most. I’m for steam, from the 20s to the 50s (medium to BIG steam), with an interest in military transport, so I’m doing long freights of flatcars behind steam. But, I can also use that steamer for passenger runs using older replicas of passenger cars, not the streamlined ones of the 40s ,50s or 60s.
So, it all depends on what rings your bell. Remember, it’s your railroad, so you can run what ever you darn please and remember to have fun while you are at it!

I like both

I’m sorry but I don’t really know as I run a fictional road so I buy undec’s if I can, if not I just get whatever and strip it, so I’ve never really paid much attention. I’d call them and find out what they have. The add only lists “Assorted Roads”.[8D]

Well I started out with present day diesel, started to buy older diesel and now I have some steam. I guess I like them all, lol.
