What is it that you hate the UNION PACIFIC so much?

I have read alot of forum’s about alot of you who just plain hate the UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD…so for what’s it’s worth,to all of you …what is it about the UP that you HATE them so much? And what can be done to get you to like them again? Go ahead and spill your guts out, mabe thay just might listen.
Now that the UP is in the mitts of another meltdown![:D]…I LOVE IT!

I just don’t like Union Pacific. I always have liked BNSF so I am annoyed that Union Pacific has just a few more miles of track than BNSF. I just want BNSF to have more track. I also really think that UP is just too big of a hotshot of a railroad!

Willy

They assimilated my beloved Southern Pacific.[:(!]When they “merge” with another railroad, all signs of that road dissapear quickly. It all turns yellow.[:(!]

Puke Yellow to be exact, Long Live the Espee! errr…well in theory anyways.

Jay

I don’t mind the yellow too much. But the Southern Pacific and Chicago Northwestern are symbols of railroads of the past. Their paint shouldn’t be messed with.

Willy

I also forgot to say, the only reason that I don’t like the UP is because of the GREAT CNW RAILWAY. The CNW “will” be missed.I was always a big fan of the:
The CHICAGO&NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD[bow].

I don’t Hate the UP, they’re just my least favorite. Their style is one of gluttony, not unlike microsoft whom I do hate

How much imagination does it take to root for the front runner? NONE!

dont hate really any railroad.just question some of their practices.how are you going to keep traffic with poor service?
stay safe

Success is the best revenge.

I don’t mind UP, I also don’t mind the yellow.

If it’s a railroad it’s all good in my books.

Are we not just seeing a lot of reaction to the royalties issue?? Certainly a major PR flop.

The UP,BNSF and any of these BIG railroads are just too sterile imho. Give my the IAIS, IC&E, KB&S or any of these kinda shortlines anyday. Alot more interesting that goat boats on itermodal trains or another yellow block on wheels.(the SD70m’s are handsome locos). LONG LIVE THE ROCK!!!

Why? The management of that place is so out of touch its sick. Its hard to explain just how to an average railfan unless you work around it and see it daily. In one recent example, a UP official failed one of our guys in an efficiency test for failing to say “RED ZONE” when going in between equipment. Our guy said “in-between” which is what he is required by our RR to say. Our managers just shook their head and laughed at the UP idiot when he reported this “failure”. They wrote another guy up for not having his earplugs in his ears, although they were around his neck and he was nowhere near the engine (thus not required to be wearing them) Only two of hundreds of incidents; I could write all night long. Point is: Why don’t these people do something constructive like, maybe figure out how they can slow the MELTDOWN of their pathetic managed RR rather than point out “violations” that ain’t even violations?!!

I miss Conrail, but I hold no ill will towards NS or CSX . NS runs just as many trains by CP-Bloom as Conrail did (maybe even more) and that is what matters. As far as what the management is doing for a specific railroad I don’t care; I’m not railfanning because of the management. I hear my friends complain all the time over some dumb $h*t the managers have done at their place of employment so it can’t be just happening at UP.

I agree with the last part of your statement. People on here are mostly old enough to realize that everything is cyclical. UP will recover and regain all the lost ground and be on top again. I don’t see much UP, so BNSF fan because I recognize their engines. But like them all.

UP is the Martha Stewart of the railroad industry. It’s competitive corporate ego matches its physical size only to find it’s karma causes it to trip over it’s own feet on the red carpet in a very public way. I regret the industry’s community black eye that once again only reinforces the perception that the reach of Class I roads exceeds their grasp. We Can Handle It? I have no ill will against UP but
it is mismanaged. I hope they resolve their self created problems as quickly as possible.

As a retired UP (7 years Great Northern, 33 years Chicago Northwestern and the final 5 yars UP) employee I think the biggest fault of the UP is lousy planning in its recent mergers and other aquasitions. When they took over the CNW there was a period of about nine months of chaos. The same and only worse when the SP was taken over.

The management did not listen to the employees of the acquired properities and it showed.

Hope the next one is better.

Sister Jen, I have this impulse to give you a great big hug after reading that! I happen to like the UP because they pay me to watch trains. But the thrill comes no matter whose train I’m watching. So I was most assuredly a BNSF fan while I was in Lincoln (except for that minute or two when I was an OLB fan)!

As a railroader, I see plenty of things while train-watching that I recognize as screw-ups. But I’m not privy to all that went on beforehand, nor should I be speculating on what should have been done instead. At work, I just do my job as best I can, trying hard to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

Seems to be a pervasive attitude among management - don’t listen to the help!

The complaint by razzy24us about overzealous rules enforcement is rather short-sighted since the situations he cites involve safety rules. It is important to everybody that following the safety rules becomes second nature to the worker since it improves his chances of finishing his tour of duty with all parts intact.

Safety is of the first importance in the discharge of duty.
