I may sound stupid asking this on the main forum but what the **** does “LHS” mean. I am new to this train hobby and dont know the terms yet. This may sound stupid but I think it stands for “local highschool” I know Im wrong but its a guess.
Local Train Shop. The difference being that a LHS will also carry other hobby items like model cars, RC equpitment and the like. A local Train Shop is exclusive to Trains (and quite rare).
How about LSMFT - if you remember cigarette commercials.
Or - FKPH&W - if you’ve ever read the novel MASH.
Or - TCP - if you ever thought Chevron Gas really had a detergent quality. (I was told that TCP meant “Two Cups Phillips”).
It seems the acronymns abound, lately…or, perhaps, they’ve always been with us. IMHO, they have re-surfaced STS (so-to-speak). TTFN, ISYL, GLTA (good luck to all)!
And I’ve never smoke in my life. It was also along time before I was born. It’s that silly trivial stuff that sticks with me… now, if I could only remember my kids birthdays.[;)]
& according to my best bud’s dad (who passed away a little over a year ago) who grew up in the era (graduated in '61 or '62) & was a self admitted “greaser” & “hot rodder” at the time, informed us it also meant something else quite [censored]
Sorry about that-ANYWAYS, the one “abbreviation” that’s had me scratching my head trying to figure out is “IRRHC” or “IRRC”-I forget what it its exactly. I’ve tried to use context thinking, but still haven’t figured it out. [%-)]
I’m a graduate of LHS (Laramie High School). My nephew graduated from a different LHS, here in Logan, Utah. BTW I know of three LTSs in Utah, one each in Ogden, Salt Lake City (aka SLC), and Orem.
An LHS can sometimes mean Local Hardware Store. There’s one on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with a train section. Mostly, though, it’s a reminder that much of what you need, like paints, brushes, plaster, etc., can be found far more economically in other venues without the word “hobby” on the jar to double the price.
Or, then there’s the philosophical nature of the beast. It’s more than just a brick-and-mortar shop with shelves and counters. In the right hands, it’s a library, a classroom, a fix-it shop, a museum and a gathering place, akin to the neighborhood tavern, but (usually) without the drinks and food. The reason a good LHS can withstand the onslaught of the Internet is service. It’s worth a little more to keep a good one in business. Yeah, sometimes you want to go where everyone knows your name.
