I live near Hayford Junction in Chicago and there are always trains waiting to get in or around Clearing Yard. Anyhow, there is usually a Canadian Pacific,Norfolk Southern or CSX AC4400 waiting for the signal to change. As soon as it throttles up,there is this zipping noise. If there are multile engines, they make the noise one after the other…It’s not the sst,sst sound, but more like a generator kicking in or something…Anybody know…

Air compressor kicking on…GEs make a whoop/zip sound…like a big electric motor winding up real fast.

Thanks for clarifying that. It’s kind of a cool sound…On a nice, quiet night I can hear the GEs growling away in Landers Yard and I can hear the GEs throttling up while going to/from Clearing Yard…
The other day (Thursday I think) we had jet planes flying over – the Blue Angels, in Milwaukee for an air show. My poor mother, who hadn’t been outside all day, was beginning to think we were under attack or something! Then add to that, a really noisy old CP SD40-2 going by 1/4 mile away! [:o]
