what is the thinner for scalecoat II (2)?

I’m in the middle of a paint project and I’ve run out of thinner for the scalecoat II paint I am useing. My LHS does’nt carry scalecoat and it will take a week to get through the mail.In the meantime, maybe I could pick something up at the hardware store.I want to get the correct solvent so that I don’t melt my models

Mike!

Be careful with Scale Coat II! A number of guys at my LHS have had a few “nightmare” stories when then mixed Scale Coat II with "non-Scale Coat II products. This is one reason why they’ve switched to Acrylics.

I use acrylics but still use Scale Coat II for metalizing with Alclad II.

If you want to “risk it”, don’t use mineral spirits from the hardware store. You can try automotive lacquer thinner available at automotive paint stores. Just ask your neighborhood body shop where they buy their supplies from. (In fact, a friendly shop might even be willing to pour you a little thinner in a jar–though that is illegal.)

It can be tough, but be patient and wait for the correct thinner from Scale Coat. Why take the chance in ruining a model you’ve spent time and money on? I’ve already learned my lesson!

Scalecoat ll was a UNIQUE plastic compatable paint {and thinner) and I don’t beiieve there is a commercia match. it was proprietary. You best bet might be to contact SCALECOAT - assuming they are still in business - or find some stores that have old stock…

Not to worry, Scalecoat II is still produced and available, the original poster just did not want to wait a seek or more for his LHS to get some in. As a matter of fact my LHS has the thinner for Both Scalecoats and Floquil in stock.

I have always been a proponent of only using thinners made by the paint manufacturer and not mixing them. Just my personal preference.
