I just got an Atlas SD24 from another modeler at the east end of the US. It has something in it that I’ve never seen before and I want to know what it is and what is it’s purpose.
That’s a speaker housing with a brass slug in it for extra weight. If you had a sound unit, that’s where the speaker would go.
At first, I thought it was a speaker baffle. But, now I just don’t know. [%-)] Is this on the front or the back of the engine?
It’s at the back.
As Robert Beaty indicated, that is the spot where the speakers would go on a QSI factory installed sound equipped unit. Your unit doesn’t have sound so Atlas placed two weights there instead.

Mike
I have a Dash 8 BW with the same thing. I had wondered what it was. Thanks for asking and the answers.
On board, detachable flying saucer.[alien]
Loathar, then it has two of them.
Robert’s right. It might be a cost saving measure. (one chassis design, non-sound just gets weight; sound gets speakers)
Thanks for the prompt replies. I thought at first it may be some kind of electronic device but I couldn’t imagine what. I decided it would be prudent to ask before I took it apart,
No, it’s the Escape Pod

I just picked up 3 Atlas C424’s and they have the cut outs as well. I think its a great idea for Atlas to do this, it makes converting to sound later on a whole lot easier.
FWIW, 1.25" speakers will fit in there…2 of them.
