What is this thing?????

I am in the midst of detailing an Athearn C44-9W to match NS C40-9W #8909. On the left side of the loco, just behind the big step and A/C unit, there is a “box”. It appears that the side (facing the outside) may be screen or expanded metal, the end (facing the walkway) I’m not sure of, it may be solid or like the side. Anyone know what this “box” is, the actual sizes for it, and is it see-through or not? The links below are for the photos I have been using to help me detail. Thanks.

On the walkway side, the top edge of this thing has a yellow safety stripe if that helps anyone .

You’ll find “the box” on many NS locomotives. It’s simply there to carry spare coupler knuckles &/or air hoses.

The box you describe is a cab heater and air conditioner. I built ge locomotives for over twenty years.

Overland Models offers this in their spare parts catalog for HO Scale. It is OMI #9719 Knuckle (Tool) Basket. There is a drawing of it posted on their website. Athearn also includes it on their RTR SD60 but I don’t know if it is available separately. Hope that this helps.

It’s a FON DUE POT! [:p] No wait, I don’t know what it is.[:p]
