running the trains i’m just starting on building and scenery.
I like to build structures - mainly kits at this point, some with a little modification. I’m not yet into scratchbuilding but will get there eventually.
Like some others, I really like getting new locomotives. Right now I’m busting at the seams waiting for a RDG G2sa Pacific from Eddystone Locomotives. I guess I still have a little bit of “kid” left in me.
Operations. The gratifying conclusion of the complex solution the the construction problem.
I really like it all, with the following exceptions:
Cleaning track
Cleaning wheels
Building trees
Painting figures
Those last two I actually enjoy - but only when I really need something to do that doesn’t involve much brain-work.
Of all the aspects of the hobby, the one I like the best is bringing dead old brass back to life (We can make it better than it was; we have the technology.)
A steam loco that looks great and runs well is a joy to behold!
I would have to say…switching (or shunting) puzzles. Part of my layout is based upon John Armstrong’s Timesaver puzzle. I love to have experienced modelers come over and try to “beat the clock”.
Elmer, I am in your camp. Ruminating and figuring and thinking and then doing something from scratch is the most rewarding part of my hobby experience. Many-many years ago, someone (in the pages of MR, I think) coined the term “Imagineering.”

For me, I’d say my favorite part would be structures, and adding details to scenes. Those use my imagination more, so I like them best.

Seeing it come to life. Scenery I guess is the best part, it is where the real details make it all worth the time and the head aches[swg]
I like running trains the most. Of course, right now I have to go to the club to do that since I don’t have enough of my layout done yet to run anything on it.

It’s even more fun doing tat with a grandson. KIds generally have a much shorter attention span than we do so when they lose interest, I can always give him back! [swg]

My favorite part of model railroading is running my steam engines, they are fantastic to watch work, I also love building buildings from walthers cornerstone serious, im redoing my layout to industry, and i like BIG buildings, I like working with electricy, but my best favorite is buying a steam locomotive from ebay taking it apart, cleaning it, and make sure it runs smoothly, if it don’t, i like to fix it. Model railroading is also a very relaxing hobby, i like to go down to my train room, sit down and relax for a coulpe of hours, but time flys by fast when your haveing fun, i’m 60 years old and i love being a kid, now adays it’s the only way to save your insanity, this world today took our sanity away a long time ago. My favorite part(s) of the hobby are adding new things to my layout that look good and fit in. I also like to just kick back and rail fan while the train makes its way around the track at scale speed - as close as I can figure it at least.
Tracklayer
I would have to say, laying track, laying turnouts, tunnels, mountains, forest ALL THE ABOVE[(-D] I love to see my SD90mac"s pull my stacktrains though all of that!!! TrainsRme1
Hey UP
Do you have a website? I would like to see your layout, I’m a fan of Union Pacific[:)]
I really enjoy building structures and adding tons of detail to them, I’m kind of a detail junkie. I also enjoy going to shows with my club and displaying our club layout. The people you meet at the shows is great and I’ve formed a few good friendships with a few of them.
i enjoy buying locomotives and watching my trains go in infinite circles lol.
The building and operating, scenery is not my strong point!!! Yes and finding ways to aquire those new loco’s and cars with out breaking the budget.
To be able to recreate actual moves etc on a layout that has the size to portray some interest in the actual working side while not being all crammed together.
Started in this hobby way back in the late 40’s and have not lost interest and still yearn for that new loco and spend a lot of time looking and dreaming, but I guess that applys to all of us. It sure is a long way ahead of what was back in the early years with the amount of equipment available and much more detailed right off the shelf.

Runing locos back and forth on my double track test track with a crossover.I was able to add scenery, with help from Woodland Senics, and advice from my LHS.
I have been hooked on Operations for 20 years now. It’s become so addictive, when I walk into someone’s layout room, I boldly ask for a throttle and Train Orders. Three years ago, thanks to a close friend, I even had an opportunity to operate one of the cabs on the monster Pasadena Model Railroad Club layout. Researching what I model (Maine Central and Boston & Maine circa 1975) would take a close second.
As for what I’m good at: I enjoy planning and building the benchwork. I’m considered the guru of tracklaying in our area. And all things electrical, from layout wiring to DCC (still on a learning curve on that one). Scenery is left to everyone else .
