What is your favorite part of the hobby?

Just thought I would see what everybody likes the most.

I couldn’t vote, I like everything from the research to building. But I think the thing I like best is doing something I have never done before and learning how to do it well!

Why does everyone forget “other”?

Sorry SpaceMouse this is my first poll that I have posted. I will try to remember it for next time.

I enjot it all, the mechaincal side of building cars, or workingon engines, scenery, design, painting… all that jazz… But I the “favorite” part of me is becoming the social aspect of it. The freindship of others that I am meeting in the hobby. Sitting aroudn compareing notes, laughing at someone’s mistake becuase you did it too, and getting lost in time in a operating session.

Good poll. good thread

Best Regards

I would think that my favorite would fit into the “Other” catagory that Chip alluded to. I didn’t know it until I got into the hobby but what I found out I really enjoy is learning about the history and engineering of railroading itself. The more things that I can learn and understand historically about railroading and the era that I’m modeling, the more I can apply it to my layout in order to make it more realistic.

Along with actually running the trains, I really enjoy the modelling aspect., too because as I am buiding a coaling or interlocking tower, I can learn about what exact these things did to aid the railroad to run more efficiently and safely. It’s really difficult just to choose one item, especially if that one item isn’t one among the list. of choices.

This is a tough one for me to answer because I enjoy several areas equally.

Favorite part of my obsession? Weathering. Making such a drastic difference in the appearance of an object makes me just…mmmmmmm. The after math of the transformation is what gets me going.

I don’t feel I’m “getting there” or “hitting the mark” without the weathering, especially steam locomotives. To me, that makes a model “it”. I’m not one of those guys who can be happy running glossy, clean trains through his realistic scenery.

Everything has got to be aged to some degree. Its how I gets down baby. [:D]

I seem to spend a lot of time super-detailing and fiddleing with my steam engines to get them to run as smooth as possible and makeing them as realistic as I can.The trouble with that is I usually go back and re work them as my skills improve. While doing this, work on the layout suffers and I end up with a nice size “test track” clogged with motive power.

I have several - none of which are listed.

Modeling equipment, structures and scenes that remind me of growing up and college years.

Learning more about the history of the railroad and its surrounding area.

The hows and whys of railroading (ie: locomotives, rolling stock, bridges, what was shipped etc).

The self satisfaction I get when I complete a project. No, it isn’t as good as I would like it to be, but as long as its better than my previous project it brings a smile - and that’s what counts.

I personally enjoy collecting locomotives.

All the above & then some!!!

I voted for watching trains, but truth be told I enjoy all of it. All that you listed plus building kits, scratchbuilding, going to trainshows, etc.
Enjoy

It’s hard to decide on just one, as I like every one of those choices… but my wife says I “enjoy spending money” the most !

Wow, when I made up this list, I did it quickly. I obviously missed several that could have and should have been on the list. I find it interesting to learn about what other people really enjoy most with the hobby, so keep the posts coming.

Designing b/c i dont have to do that much work

I’m too new to have a favorite. Tooting the whistle on my E7 is pretty cool. Especially when I can bring it up behind one of the old guys at the club who’s gabbing instead of working ro running trains. Fun to watch them jump.

there’s lots on the list I like but my favorite is… I’m a scenery guy. I lve building the buildings but once you get the streets in and the grass and trees and everything come together that’s the magic. Rob

Watching trains roll through my scenery. Thats when the magic happens.
After that, my favorite is doing scenery. I enjoy getting messy. : )

The’re all really fun!
I like to operate AND watch my train at the same time. I find it’s much safer that way[(-D]
