What is your favorite type of train to watch

I was kinda wondering of what kinda of trains you like to sit and watch. Even chase
My favorite kind just happens to be amtrak trains and second type would be frieght trains because each train has something. I have not seen before.

One of my favorite sayings of all time

THE LIGHTS ARE ON THE GATES ARE DOWN AND THE TRAIN IS COMING [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

My favorite trains to watch are those running on rails. Slight preference given to trains powered by locomotives.

One of my favorite trains is the “loaded oil cans” that travels the Union Pacific coastline from Wunpost to the Shell Oil refinery in the Long Beach/Carson area of California. Each tank car holds 23,700 gallons of oil and weighs 136 tons. SP started this train, I believe in 1983 in the Bakersfield area (Saco) to Shell Oil. At 78 tankers long this train would carry 1,848,600 gallons of oil and weigh 10,608 tons (21,216,000 pounds) which I found to be very impressive.

Other favorites are the COFC/TOFC trains that travel over Beamont Hill, more for their length, and the manifest trains that travel anywhere and everywhere.

Any kind of trains, all trains are cool!!!, but mostly i love to watch mixed freight trains, you see a variety of everything!!!

I like to watch any train that moves, makes lots of noise, and makes the ground under your feet rumble[:D].

manifests and Amtrak. As an aside, the blue and grey(silver) Amtrak paint scheme makes it harder to see at a distance. At least the BNSF pumpkins and UP’s Yellow stand out.

For me it would be any train pulling up to stop for a crew change with a pure AC6000 consist. Then I close my eyes and imagine those engines being alcos. They sound like an alco, smoke like an alco and are just as problematic, too.

like the manifest today. 3 engines(borrowed from uncle pete) had to be almost 2 miles long and had a bit of everything.what made it better was csx was doing trackwork so they had to rumble by slowly.

The trains I like to watch/chase are the coal trains in Sheboygan on the Union Paicfic sub division. I also watch the local. It’s fun because I know their next move and can beat them there to take pictures!!!

Dustin

Call me sentimental but . . . the trains I like to watch are Passenger trains pulled by PAs or Es. [:)]

(I must admit though I never saw a passenger train pulled by a PAs, only Es.)

STEAM trains.

High speed TOFC trains running at 70 MPH w/ 3 to 4 4000+ HP units on the point. The future of railroading my friends!!

Now if we can get more track capacity like multitrack mains and ROW maintained to least FRA Class 4 standards then all will be right with the world.

Would prefer to watch moving trains. Sometimes that isn’t even possible. Somehow, watching a parked train just isn’t as exciting.[sigh]

1st. Loaded Coal Trains. With NO DPU.
2nd. Grain Trains.
3rd. Manifests.
4th. Intermodel Trailer Trains. Not Double Stacks.
5th. Tanker Trains.

Least Favorite.
1st. Double Stacks.
2nd. Auto Rack Trains.
3rd. Hopper Trains.

End of List.
Allan.

I like to watch switching in yards, but on the mainline I like passenger (Amtrak) first and mixed manifest consists second!

Two Words,
Live Steam

There ain’t nothing else like it.

  1. Passenger trains(Amtrak,tourist,whatever)
  2. 3 or 4 SD40’s with a stalled coal drag trying to start again

mixed freight pulled by CSX / BNSF /anything noisy ,loud etc.[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

BART - The variey of consists just can’t be beat

I’m like a lot of people: my very favorite train to watch is an Amtrak with the new silver-trimmed-with-blue Diesel loco, especially if it’s going REALLY fast. I’ve never seen an Acela in the flesh, but I’m sure I would love it too.

My second favorite probably would be a stack intermodal because they’re so colorful and have so much variety – true, the amount of consumer goods we’re importing from Asia, particularly the PRC, is depressing, but the boxes themselves are fun to see.

My second favorite USED to be the shortish mixed freight with caboose, but that’s pretty much an extinct species. Except for a couple of Railboxes, I don’t think I’ve seen a boxcar unmarred by graffiti for at least a year. So I find today’s mixed consists a little depressing, and the lack of a caboodle certainly doesn’t increase their charm.
